In October 2018 I removed the Z3's outer sills, cleaned up the rust, treated with Fertan and then slapped on Dinitrol underbody seal. Was idling looking under the car today try and see whether I need a set of Mazza's tank straps and the sill looks just as bad as ever.

What products can I use to make it last more than a year and a half?RH3.JPG

If your going to have another go I would clean to bright metal, treat with a rust convertor then paint with galvanizing paint followed by a final coat of a rust prevention underseal product. Looks like the Dinitrol got washed away, maybe it didn't have enough of a key on the surface to get a long lasting grip. When I had my sills off I had no rust so just ensured it was clean and clear waxoyle was applied. Car never used in the winter so not had them off again to check condition.

I used Bilt Hamber to get back to bright steel, then epoxy mastic to seal it, followed by colour coat. Did 18mths ago and still looks fine

Which Bilt Hamber product did you use? And do you have a brand name for the epoxy mastic please? I have read that Bilt Hamber products are very good.

You read right, they’re very good indeed. I used Bilt Hamber Deox Gel and Lechlar 29107 epoxy primer.

The Deox takes a long time though. I prob spent two or three weeks just applying, cleaning off and then reapplying the gel til all the rust was gone.

I can also recommend Deox but also this other product they have Electrox which is a galvanizing primer, then over coat with chassis black stone chip or any other protective paint

Thank you for your suggestions. I think I will get the Deox gel and I already have on the shelf International Interprotect epoxy primer, left over from when I painted a fibreglass Elan. There's a nice lockdown job!

It’s a perfect job for lockdown really, given the widespread travel restrictions means its no real loss having car off the road for a while

I would’ve done some more bits in recent weeks, but couldn’t find anywhere selling a properly rated A2P3 mask, as my previous one had expired. Everyone is out of stock for obvious reasons:nurse::thumbsup:

Your date expired mask will be absolutely fine to use. Trust me.

Cheers mate, but wasn’t really referring to a date - it was a 28 day 3M disposable that I’d used for 18mths on all sorts of jobs, not just car paint. Stored in the bag between uses, but started to get a slight whiff of epoxy so binned it

I've tried POR-15 in the past and didn't like it either.
