Fault Code Reader

Does anyone have any recommendations for a fault code reader? I know the Z3M is NOT OBD2 but the old 20 pin connector.

Will a new OBD2 reader but with an adapter lead work?

I just bought an App called "Carly" then bought the adapter they sell. The app was £48 and the adapter £68 this is the top end of the scale but it does so much more than normal readers. You can access all ECU's on any BMW's. I have tried it on 3 z3's so far with great results.
