Read the codes today after a drive and still had ASC lights on, this is what I got, I will assume that the wheel sensors are cheap after market ones that I fitted but whats the other one and how does it ralate to the ASC
Thanks

There is a secondary cable/linkage on the throttle which the ASC uses to reduce engine power when the ASC is activated. Not sure what is involved in it.

On a " fly by wire" type when tbe wheels spin up it cuts power to the motor. Yours is a mechanical version of the same thing
Have a look if you have cable not connected anywhere near the throttle mechanism mate. Engine end and pedal end.

Tony.

I think I've seen that error before when someone brought their car for me to diagnose. That was an early model too.

I never got to the bottom of it. It's 1 of only 2 errors I've ever seen I've been unable to fix :(

Just an after thought, during the build I snagged the loom to the wheel speed sensor and went through both wires, I soldered them and used heat shrink as a repair, could this have blown a fuse

Its 38 and 46 mate sorry...
38 30amp
46 15 amp
Thanks pal, is that one for each front sensor, I did have a quick look when I had done the repair but there was nothing obvious, I thought that one would have blown as the wires where touching and I had driven the car

It doesn't say it just lists them both as ABS/ASC not sure if it would blow the fuse but it would trigger the error as the sensor would not be seen...

When I blew the central locking fuse recently the diagnostics actually knew the fuse was blown with a separate error.

Hi Sean here is the elec troubleshooting manual and shows the connections for all the items if you want to test the continuity of all the items you can use it to find the relevant pins for all the items.

If you test the resistance of the wheel speed sensors at the ABS plug they should all be about the same.

Have you cleared all the codes and then driven it to see if they come back.

I have some more descriptions of how the system works if you want some night time reading :):)

http://wedophones.com/Manuals/BMW/1996 BMW Z3 Electrical Troubleshooting Manual.pdf

got to 3450.1 (20th heading on lh side) there are a few pages with the diagrams for the 6 cylinder cars.

Thanks for that Brian but to me it looks like a plate of spaghetti :D we did reset the codes but the ABS lights stayed on, I never read the codes again

I know the feeling with the wiring. extreme patience is required to trace wires and their colours are not always as described.

I thought that when I first started studying the electrics. But they are your best bet unless it’s a simple fault.

They aren’t so bad when you get used to them. And BMW document conventions, locations etc very well.

If nothing else they are good for knowing what fuses do what.

@Sean d,

It may be worth checking earth point X170. It is behind the Left Hand footwell speaker grille. This earth is connected to both front ABS sensors and pins 8 and 24 on the Slip Control Unit.

Also double check the plugs X1170 and X1175 for bent pins at the Slip Control Module

Thats a very imformative and much appreciated post, thank you,
However things have changed somewhat,
When the original codes where read I had had tge car out for a short run and never read the codes again once cleared, today I put the Snap on scanner on and read the codes, ABS is now only showing one code which is
88 right side rear wheel speed sensor open circuit,
So whats happened, these cars have some character to say the least :)
