So fan blew up, think it was because the shroud wasnt held down all the way and what ever little hose that meets at the top of the radiator on top of the upper radiator hose got caught on the fan.
Does anyone know where the other end of this hose goes? The fan chopped it up so if it didnt lead anywhere I wouldnt know it
I'm leaking coolant and cant tell if its from this or something else. If it was an overflow shouldnt matter being chopped up right?

Your post suggest that the TU engine wasn’t fitted to the pre-facelift 2.8i, is that the case? I have the TU engine in my pre-lift 2.8, should that engine be in my car?

Funnily enough I noticed the fan surround not clipped at the bottom on my car just this week doing a service. It was chewed a bit but I got there in time. I said to my lad we dodged a bullet there. Could have ended same way as yours.

That top small hose goes all the way to the coolant reservoir on a pipe that goes all along the intake and over the suspension turret to the coolant tank. that's if you have the later style 2.9. this tube is used for the coolant in the radiator to overflow back to the expansion tank when the coolant expands on the radiator. The other end should be near the air filter or MAF or thereabouts.

Some TU engines where fitted to MK1 but more common in the ‘facelift’

Those bloomin pipe arrangements are only available from BMW at £30. They can't be easily repaired as they normally break on the plastic section. Well unless you reengineer it in copper like I think some here have done.

The lesson btw is the fan shroud is easy to put back thinking you have secured it when it may only be secure at the top. Locating can easily misfire at the bottom leaving it to flap.

I’ve ditched the blooming thing and have a electric one in its place with a temp controller.

I used to run without it altogether for years (using just the aux (a/c) fan on the front with a lower temp sensor front the 1.9 so it worked at 88c.

In a moment of OEM stupidity I refitted it to save money on the additional electric set up. It only ended up costing me my new radiator :banghead:Sometimes aftermarket is best - the viscous idea is best for low revving tractors and has long since been ditched by BMW anyway.

Only reason I’ve done the additional electric one is because I’m tracking it and it got hot doing Lydden Hill on a scorching 30+c day. Have done an evening at Brands around 20c and it was fine without it.
Car is on 136k miles by the way.

Fixed the fan. Hard finding it, guess a lot more people than i thought switched to electric. Id switch too if I wasnt on a budget.
Took it for a drive and its leaking coolant. Think its to the hose it caught on its way down (makes sense). My hands on the hose thats shredded. Can anyone tell me where the other end goes?

On my car, that hose goes to the coolant expansion tank behind the strut tower, as per the photo below (which isn't my car) and Mario's comment a bit further up:thumbsup:

You can make a pressure tester quite easily and inexpensively. Get a spare expansion bottle cap and remove all the gubbins. Get a screw fixed tyre valve and drill a hole in the cap and fit the valve. You can then pressurize the cooling system using a foot pump or a bicycle tyre pump.

Figured id close the book on this for any future searches. And that was indeed the house thank you kindly! Unfortunately it still leaked, and I couldn't find it so i had to concede and take it to a shop. Went the way of Dino and took out my new radiator, go figure.

The nipple where that hose attaches might have a hairline crack - I had that in one of my old zeds
