I used a German box on my brother's 1.9 4 years ago. Works very well. Garage fitted it and had to heat/bend it very slightly to fit. And is quite throaty but in a good way :)

Absolute bargain for £45.46 with no price rise in that time.

For anyone looking down the line and finding the link expired it's this seller (search Z3 rear silencer)

Thanks

I purchased a rear box from Germany approx four months ago. Really good quality ,very heavy compared to the usual after market ones. Fitted no problem , the only hassle I had was getting the correct front pipe with the cat. there are different ones depending on the engine M43 or 44 and it had to be heated and bent to fit. you will find that the new rear box has the same diameter as the front pipe and you have to use a sleeve type clamp which I found difficult to get a gas tight seal.

I got an absolute bargain IMASAF exhaust that I picked up for a fiver second hand off ebay. Its one of the ones you can pick up for £50 new.

It clamps on the M44 rather than sleeved like the M43 and its been on the car for a couple of years now. It's been brilliant for the price. If I was being really picky, its not quite as quiet and sweet as the original BMW one, but that's the only criticism and it's certainly not an issue.

I coated it in AC50 to protect it a bit when I put it on as I was a bit dubious about quality, but it's still looking good at the back and I'm sure another coating of AC50 would have it looking almost new again.

I've just fitted an exhaust (cat back) that I bought off eBay for around £60 a few months back. I just wanted something as the existing was on its way out. The old one had a double skinned silencer and the outer was pretty rotten and vibrating, rattling and holey. It made a right racket. Could it have been original? Car had 70k on when I bought it and the tailpipe was rectangular section with a semi-circle on each end. Not what I would call oval but like an oval track.

Anyway the new one has a quite deep note to it, which was a surprise. Love it at tick-over but not sure at any other speed.

6 cylinder factory exhausts are bullet-proof and seem to go on for ever.

4 cylinder still very good, often to around 100k.

I bought one of the cheap cat back exhaust from German ebay way back when I first bought my black zed. It had a really loud boy racer back box on when I bought it and I couldn't stand the constant drone for much more than half an hour.
The early 1.9 exhaust is very much the same design and dimensions as the early pre facelift 2.8 except that it doesn't have the twin tail pipes. Anyway, ordered it from Germany and it turned up 3 days later. I think I paid about £130 including delivery. It's great quality, made by Thyssen Thrupp and doesn't sound too bad either.
My silver zed still has it's original factory fitted exhaust so that's 22yrs old now, so I agree with Robs earlier comment.

When the time comes for me to replace the silver zeds exhaust I'm going to get another cheap German one.
