Erratic Aux Fan

My car overheated and the indie has said that the Aux fan is erratic - sometimes it comes on and sometimes it does not. As a temporary measure we shorted the contacts so it's always on.
Is there any logical reason for this?
- An erratic Aux fan relay?
- An erratic temp sensor in the rad?
- Any other ideas....?

I would favour the sensor in the rad rather than the relay personally. The sensor in the rad feeds the relay which is simply a switch.

I am with Tony on the rad switch, easy and cheap to change, might as well. Mind you make sure the rad is bled properly so the switch works as it should.
