speaking to a guy today about the zed, and how I'm getting really attached to them.

He was asking how compatible other engines would be, i.e. Would a 2.8 fit straight into a 1.9 etc. Told him I had no idea, but I would think that the chassis would be similar and possibly just mounts etc that may differ,,,, then he asked a belter.........

"Why don't you drop a 3lt turbo diesel unit into it"
Just laughed at that and he kinda scowled and asked why, what would be wrong with that..

Couldn't answer, would a big diesel fit ?

Said I'd ask and let him know

Lol, I wouldn't, my mechanical knowledge stops when I close the door, I just didn't know if they would fit

3ltr diesel infact any zed diesel conversions has a whole host of problems been thinking about for a bit.
3lt too new marrying up the electronics would be a nightmare.
Most compatible unit i reckon would be the E36 325 tds unit also the wiring dash clocks etc most compatible with the zed.
Dont think its impossible but certainly not going to be drop it in plug in a few bits and bobs and away you go .
1st problem is if the E 36 325 tds is going to be the donor car then they are quite rare and good ones starting to hold a value but i quite like the idea of a torquey remapped diesel zed ( bit of grunt with some reaonable mpg )

You can fit pretty much any engine in any car with enough time money and skill

Whether up should is a completely different topic

I suppose it depends on your view bmw has always refrained from fitting its diesel unit to any of its zed models when other manufacturers have went down that path so i reckon to many its sacrilege to do so .
But i still think it would be an interesting project if a full proper working / driving car could be built.

Anything can be done if you really want. One of my customers has a Defender 90 with a 475bhp supercharged Jaguar V8 under the bonnet. It looks completely standard but will get to 60mph in under six seconds and will wipe the smile off most car driver's faces from a standing start.

If I had a garage space this would be the sort of stuff I'd like to do, a nice 4wd from a Scooby would be fun...... Back when I was younger fitting another engine to a car was so much simpler but even now aftermarket ignition and fuel injection system's are quite easy to use. the first step to fitting another engine in my Mk3 Cortina was going to the scrappy with a tape measure to see what engine would fit :p then place engine and gearbox in said car and adjust height using a engine crane then make engine mounts to suit where it was placed :)
