1999 2.8 dual vanos After a long time in a jam the engine started to hunt on idle and then stop. when I got moving the engine was misfiring even at 40mph. A few miles further no problems then when I stopped misfiring again. When I got to destination it would not start again. Error codes cam sensor and Fuel train bank 1 and bank 2. I changed the inlet cam sensor recently but not a BMW item but unsure of fuel train bank.
Any suggestions please
Michael

Check codes again. Likely cam sensor or connections.

Your fuel trims bank 1 & 2 may be telling you that there is a vacuum leak. With a warm engine at idle look at the short time fuel trims, >8% means a vacuum leak. If you rev the engine and they reduce, that confirms it.

Usual suspects are:
- rubber boot from MAF to throttle body/idle control valve. The small tee off to the Idle control valve tends to crumble with age.
- rubber caps on the back of the manifold that split and leak
- hoses for the Crank Case Vent system
