Hi guys just got a Simota induction system looking to fit in the next week or so. I have a strange pump thing that cuts on just after the car has started. Seems to cut off pretty quickly any ideas what it is for and if I need it. Or how to fit the Simota with this pump still in place?

Cheers Andy

Hi Andy, that's the "smog" pump which was fitted for the US market. It blows air into the manifold to lower emissions on start up. You can remove it and bin it, it will make no difference to the car.

Tony.

Hi thanks, do I need to block up any holes left behind?

Andy

On my 2.0 there was a vacuum capsule on the cylinder head which I removed and made a blanking plate for. Also a small vac. pipe which I plugged up with a ball bearing, but a small bolt or something will do the job. There will be an electrical connection too, which you just need to unplug and secure out of harms way. That should be it.

There is a small black capsule mounted on the side of the smog pump with another electrical plug and a blue plastic pipe going to it (on the M43 1.9). What does this do? is it a vacuum pipe for the exhaust back box valve flap fitted to 6 potters?

Not too sure Adrian, but the flap in the back box on my Z3 remains open all the time, it was only to lower noise levels if I remember right.

Tony.

Interesting, the exhaust flap on my 2.0 is open all the while too even when not running, guessed it was stuck. The RR Phantom also has such a flap valve to make it silent on tick over and open up at speed.
Shall have to see if the Bentley manual covers it.
