Help please, (51plate, 1.9 wide body)
1. what fault code readers are people using? I don't want to spend a fortune for something i may use rarely. (aware i need the 20pin type)
2. Car alarm goes off after locking by key fob, but not when turning key in the lock. Someone before mentioned a switch/relay behind the passenger seat under the hood. how do i get to it?
3. Started the car in the warm weather went to blip the revs and it cut out wouldn't start, had to lock and unlock with central locking and then it started, blip the revs cut out again did the lock/unlock re started......could that have been something to do with having the brake pads off with wear indicator disconnected?

Hi and welcome from Pembrokeshire, where are you located as there could be a member local to you that could possibly help , as your zed is a 51 plate is it a facelift model if so the c100 scanner seems to be a decent one around £35 / 40

Ebay is the place to get code readers and loads of info on the forum on what types people have and how to use them on the car. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Airbag-R...696883?hash=item465a2e5633:g:hVQAAOSwVL1V~o6x
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ELM327-Wi...393208&hash=item28354abeef:g:S7YAAOSwq1JZL7OH
The Wifi code reader will work with the round BMW to OBD2 cable that comes with the airbag tool and a andrid mobile phone with a suitable App loaded on it.
I use this one http://www.palmerperformance.com/products/dashcommand/index.php

If you have a Laptop you can also get BMW INPA software that can do lots more than the generic code readers but is quite involved to set up on a Laptop and get your head around its workings.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-DIAGN...524309&hash=item25c30b1cce:g:BBcAAOSwH09ZIMjC

Worth noting that the round diagnostic socket in the engine bay should be used to read all modules, the 16pin OBD socket under the steering wheel if you have one fitted only reads the engine module.

I am down in Newport so not that far from you, I have BMW Inpa and some other code readers on a Laptop, always up for plugging you in to see whats being reported.

Don't think the missing bulb would have an effect on the locking, I run mine without a bulb in place with no locking problem. Julian another member from Blackwood had alarm and locking problems, we traced to the boot loom wires being broken and corroded, had to strip and solder repair the wires. Worth checking your boot loom out for damage between the body and boot lid.

Just on a side note .
Stick your phone in the boot on video and check the boot light goes out ( bad for staying on killing battery) could be why no bulb fitted.

It could be the alarm sensor under the bonnet. LHS slam panel (seated in the car). These are common failures. Just disconnect and see what happens.

Right hand side at the front as you look at the open bonnet, its a plunger switch that closes when the bonnet shuts onto it.
My money is on the boot loom being the cause.

This is the bonnet switch.
I would agree that its more likely to be the ‘ Loom of Doom ‘ in the boot, but if it is the bonnet switch then I have one if you need it.

So, so far since taking the switch out and locking via the remote the alarm hasn't gone off.
I managed to strip the switch down as it was a little sticky. Cleaned it and re-greased the plunger and other bits.
If the alarm doesnt go off tonight, then I know it was that part. In the morning i will re-fit the switch and see if the problem recurs or not.
Thanks for the help so far......now will look up "doom of gloom"

Just send me your address by PM ( click on the envelope top right next to your forum name) and I’ll put it in the post to you. It came off a slam plate I got to repair my car so assume its ok.

You are welcome to have it, no charge, and hopefully it will fix your problem. :)
