Hi all, I bought the zed knowing that the electric hood wasn't operating correctly.
I'm trying to eliminate possible problems, one thing that I want to check is if the correct electric motor is fitted as it looks different from other z's that I've seen pics of?

Thanks.

What are the roof fault symptoms?

That's the early style hydraulic pump, and looks legit from memory. You've probably seen pictures like this which is the later version. No idea at what point they switched them over.

Well a few things actually!

1- It's a newish roof but it has been used manually recently, the first time I dropped the top to try to look at how it works left me unable to latch the roof back in position as it seems about 10mm to far forward for the holes.

2- I tightened the screw on the motor then tried to operate the roof electrically. . .
The motor wouldn't operate with the engine running only with the key turned a couple of clicks, and also it wouldn't operate when I had my foot on the brake only when I took my foot off??!!

3- when it did operate it would only go back about 50% of the way before stopping( the motor was still trying to operate but the hood stopped moving)

Any suggestions?

I have a motor like that in my 98.
The problems sound very strange, seems like brake switch is operating in reverse!
Would be good to remove it all together actually, will make opening/closing in the move a bit easier.

Have no idea about them though but problems seem pretty rare on them.

Is the fluid level in the pump correct ? It seems odd that the brake pedal has to be off as it is backwards.
If you drop the roof manually and engage the pump will it lift ?
Do you have any locking problems? The brake light switch provides power to the pump system when pressed its odd it removes it.
The loom of doom in the boot lid may be a cause it appears to affect quite a few systems when faulty.

The fluid was a tiny bit low so I topped it up to the mark, but it made no real difference apart from eliminating that reason for it not working.

Yes the brake switch thing is working the wrong way around ( not sure how to resolve this?)

The brake lights do work ok when the brakes are used.

The electric motor doesn't lift the roof when it's been put down.

The central locking doesn't work either so could that be a clue!?

Thanks.

Try the loom that goes from the boot to the boot lid its on the left as you open the boot in the rubber the wires snap in here with age it may answer all your problems worth a look:thumbsup:

Ok, how is best to do that?
I see the loom you mean in the rubber sleeving, there are grommets at each end, outwardly they look ok with no obvious damage.

You need to pull both grommets out and unwrap the black tape and physically check each individual wire. If there are any broken ones then that will be obvious. If all's well re-tape the wiring and replace the grommets I did this trying to locate a central locking fault, which turned out to be the n/s door solenoid, but at least I know the loom is in good order.

Ok will do.

Can I just check that this connecter that's not attached to anything isn't associated with the problem!?

I have a BMW 325ci and was looking at this vid. I remembered it when I read your post and looked it back up. Perhaps it is relevant....Frankie

That is quite similar, thanks for finding that and posting it!
Hopefully that may be the answer.
Cheers Matt
