I am so so so glad I found this thread.

The new car I just bought (fiat 500) from a large franchised dealer, has some small faults. The brakes on test drive were not great, but I was told they would be sorted before collection.

Anyway I picked the car up and the brakes were really bad, but it was about 6pm so I just left it until the morning then phoned them, I basically cant get hold of them,

So I saw this thread and thought i'd have a look.

MOT history of this vehicle

offside front Front constant velocity joint gaiter damaged to the extent that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc (2.5.C.1a)

offside rear Tyre has a lump, caused by separation or partial failure of its structure (4.1.D.1b)
and that ^^^ is what I got.

I put a deposit on the car on the 10th and collected on the 20th

They let me test drive the car with these faults!

@t-tony you're qualified to answer this, what do these MOT fails mean?

Connor.

Hi Connor, Appreciate you have directed your question to @t-tony - hope you don't mind me adding a reply - as far as the fail items on the fail sheet - I would think these relate to the handbrake mechanism (ie something siezed) on both rear wheels. The other items are relatively easy to check, although you may need to get on your hands and knees to check them out. The nearside front shock absorber you will be able to see above and behind the front nearside wheel and it should have been replaced and will look new. The o/side front constant velocity joint gaitor - you will need to get under the car and look for the driveshaft that goes into the front hub - you will see the rubber boot on this shaft and again it should be new having been replaced. The two faulty tyres should also have been replaced and appear new. This is a useful site that may help you further http://forums.motester.co.uk/index.php

More importantly if the brakes appear defective after you collected the car you should take it straight back to them and ask them to get it sorted. Were there any advisories on the pass MOT certificate you received? If the brakes are faulty - remind them it is an offence to sell a car in an unroadworthy condition.

I don't mind at all, I only directed at Tony because I know he's an MOT tester:
If it's the handbrake then that's ok, but the brakes just don't give me confidence. They've replaced the tyres ( with poor quality ones), they do seem to have replaced the shocker, but only on one side, the other is very corroded. I haven't managed to check the CV joint gaitor.

I'm going to take it back and get them to sort the brakes anyway it's not acceptable.

Thanks again,

Connor.

Were there any advisories on the pass Certificate? Does the garage you bought it from do their own MOT's or was it farmed out to another garage? Might be worth taking the car to another garage - you can usually find one that will do a free brake test, and get a second opinion. I'm not doubting what you say about the brakes, but if someone else can confirm there is a problem, it will be a bit more ammo to throw at the garage you bought it off.
The advice regarding the brakes on the fail certificate, can cover a multitude of things, but basically means something mechanical ie a cable, linkage, caliper slider, etc that should move on operation of the brakes is either very stiff or seized and prevents the brakes operating correctly.
Good luck with it.
