Thanks for the heads-up to the wiring diagrams in the resource centre. I found what I think is the right one and have emailed it to the garage.

As to what part did they replace, I assume the actual sensor, although I don't know for sure. They are 11 miles away, not just round the corner, so I can't pop in to take a look easily. I think he said the part cost £78 + VAT.

On ours when the DSC lighttp came on is was accompanied by a very brief juddering front the front brakes so the ABS had operated.
The carpets were also soaking wet when I lifts them.
I only had the DSC light on and the cause was the yaw sensor which had failed. The larger of the two senors and new these are £800 ish.
On other cars with ASC traction control when both brake and traction lights see on it has been a fault with the ABS pump unit.
The DSC has 4 wheel speed sensors, lateral and transverse acceleration sensors, 2 brake pressure sensors, steering angle sensor and a separate DSC pump.
The BMW specific code reading software can interrogate and test most of the system so possibly best if the car goes to an independent BMW specialist.

Thanks for that info Brian. Gee, these things are so complex, and I wonder how much difference they actually make to the safety of the car. Before I bought my Z3 last summer I was not sure about the wisdom of the purchase and now I'm even less sure. I have driven hundreds of thousands of miles without bother in cars without any of these tricky gadgets. I'm really going off the Zed.

Still, it has to be fixed. By the way, there is no symptom in my car of anything amiss, just the lights permanently on. The brakes work just as powerfully as usual without the juddering you experienced.

Well, after the car being in the workshop for a bit over two weeks, the DSC warning is finally out. I found the correct electrical diagrams for the car (thanks for the info on where to find them) and sent them over and they checked out all the wiring that had been soaked but couldn't find anything wrong. So they got in a more sophisticated type of code reader, and got a whole lot more information off that, principally that the lateral acceleration sensor was out of calibration. The reader allowed them to recalibrate it and WHOOPEE the lights went out. The cost of the new sensor is being covered by the warranty, so all it needs now is a new MOT and it will be good to go. Of course I still have to find out where the rain gets in... there's always something isn't there. :arghh: Still, I'm mightily relieved that I'm not staring down the barrel of a huge bill, and the workshop boss said how good the 2.2 litre engine sounded which bucks me up no end. Hopefully it will sail through the test and I'll get it back next week.
