Make sure that they measure the engine oil temperature before they do the test. It will state on the pass or fail certificate whether the temp was measured and if it was, what the temp. reading was.
It does make a difference.

No problem, happy to tell you. When the emission tester fails the car on CO2 it will automatically ask the person using it to insert the oil temp. probe and the machine will not proceed until the correct temp. is reached. By the way I am a retired MOT tester and where I worked, in Lincoln we often had people come in because their cars had failed on high co2 at other garages. Very often, not all, but very often all I needed to do was retest the car properly. By this I mean by testing the oil temp. WhT this does, on older vehicles is alter the testing parameters and usually allow the vehicle to pass. BUT, this takes time so many garages, Halford and these type of stations find it easier to fail the car, incorrectly, and send the presenter of the vehicle away. Because you have a 10 working days "free" retest they're not bothered. Unless anything has altered since I packed it in the minimum oil temp for your car would be 80 deg.C

Thanks t great explanation.
The guys I had, tried hard but my car started to overheat, I've recently refreshed the whole cooling system, but didn't change the viscous fan, just the blades. Well that's on order now! I'll ask for the oil temp check next time. Also changing the plugs, possibly the ignition coil , will do a hard run and pop some cat cleaner in there! Sure I'll get there eventually

It is better to arrive with a well heated system, as long as your car is tested at the time you're booked in for. Hope you get it through ok.
