That's a crap unfair system, won't be buying fuel there.
 
They will all follow so unless you go in to pay at the time you will have no choice if you prefer to use supermarkets.
 
What’s to stop them from doing the same with ordinary shopping. You’re still paying by credit card!

This does not happen all the time we fill up at asda every week and have never had any money taken out apart from the cost of the fuel.
All the pumps that you put a card in to pay for fuel hold the money untill you stop fuelling and then it calculates the fuel and only takes that.
 
Same system over the pond - its pre pay, so it allocates the funds from your credit card, but only charges you for what you take. If using debit card they have to take funds at the time, and refund they diff. Its generally the banking system that's really at fault, taking 2 days to credit accounts etc. Makes sense to use a credit card rather than debit, so by the time the statement drops, its sorted - cash back one is better still ;)

Same thing happens when you check into a hotel/ hire a car etc. They basically block out the amount they may charge. This stops you going over your limit and them not getting payment at the end. Usually when you check out they ask you if you want to charge the card you checked in with :cool:

But that's not the reason I wouldn't go to ASDA for fuel :whistle:or Tesco either.

Seriously though - there’s a number of ways they can sort this. They’re being somewhat disingenuous by taking £99, especially if it prevents you from accessing your own funds. Even more so if they haven’t said. Taking someone’s property without express authority
Is theft, no matter how long they have it.
I know the price of fuel is going up, but how often have you put £99 or over in one fill up? Not many cars around that will take that amount even from empty?
I thought £99 is the maximum you can get anyway?

If they are seriously trying to prevent themselves from being exposed to those who deliberately or accidentally take more than they can take from their account, they could allow you to set the maximum amount you want to spend, take that amount then you fill up. If you don’t take that the difference is refunded. Taking £99 is clearly more than they’re going to need.

What it doesn’t say is if that transaction now matter how temporary, takes your account in the red when you otherwise wouldn’t and that means you incur charges for something you haven’t spent, who is liable?

What it needs is for the vendor and the bank to negotiate the maximum that can be spent when you put your card in, not ring fence an arbitrary amount. The pump will fill up to that amount.

I use pay at pump sometimes. Will think twice now. Pay in the kiosk and take cash :D

Easy solution, don't pay at pump, pay in the kiosk:rolleyes:. Unless I've misunderstood the problem:whistle:
 
Just to add to what Dave has said, we should always pay in the kiosk when we can, it keeps someone in a job :)

Same with self serve checkouts :thumbsup:

But some ASDA fuel stations are only self serve, to keep the price low.
 
Bloody daily mail scaremongering.

This is the same as a preauthorisation at most hotels .

It's making sure you have the funds available before filling up .

So they say 99 as that's the max and then only take what you need .

If there was a mistake then that's the banks fault.

Also the person in the story was filling up £5!!!!

At the end of the day, stop worrying

Why queue up and wait behind everyone buying all sorts of crap when you can fill up and drive off
 
Pretty soon they will all do what they do over here. Pay then fill. Shirl goes into the shop, gives the cashier $50, I go fill the tank and Shirl gets the balance back.

The alternative is you put in a card with £1 before it is empty, you fill up with £99 worth of fuel and drive off.

All they are doing is ensuring that they get the money for what you have bought.

The credit / refund is immediate from Asda to your bank. It may not be immediate from your bank to you.
