We used to call them Caucescu's (not sure if that's spelled right) revenge. Remember the Romanian dictator? To be honest they weren't a really bad car, not like Lada's !!!:(:(

I thought they were Russian Tony?

I thought they were Russian Tony?
In the days of the old USSR, I suppose they were, but yes they were from Romania, or built there anyway. Lada's were from Russia, what a pile of crap, but they do have a team in the European touring Car Championship.

Skoda was Czechoslovakian although they had assembly plants in other places.....the somewhat strangely named Dacia Dusters were made in Romania.

Thank you Gail:), it's been a long time since we laughed about them, early mid 90's, a lot of water has passed under my bridge since then;). I can remember the early Dacia models based on the older Renault models. Yuck!!

Tony.

Why was I thinking just that Dave?=))=))

Well, a little off topic but for communist cars, as is my field, here are some highlights:
Skoda is/ was a great brand: Laurin& Klement started in 1895 (in the Czech republic) and made the A model in 1905.
They had original mechanical solutions during time and even the communist regime couldn't kill the brand, just make it doubtful for a while...

Lada was the export name for Zhiguli domestic market , made on Fiat 124 model in the '70s.
We made loads of jokes as in Romanian lada = wooden box/ crate.
Due to the price it was preferred by the communist leaders, despite the rear wheel traction (not suitable in the winter roads).

And now Dacia 1300: made on Renault 12 model , in the '70s , was (the car and only) most wanted by the Romanians. Sold with 1200 USD for export, it was about 2000 USD for local market, with deposit and awaiting line of 5-6 YEARS!

With a 6.5 l/ 100 km and this huge storage capacity, could be a good car for @jue1 as it's an historical car these days!
In Africa they still due a great job, after 40 years!:

Sorry again for the off topic @Grumpy and congratulations @Gail for the knowledge!
