Try cleaning the throttle body with carb cleaner to eliminate any sticking of the butterfly and take the idle control valve off and clean that with carb cleaner spray. Once clean and dry refit and see if that has cured it. Also check out all the small rubber pipes around the idle control valve for cracks and leaks.

Ok, all done and running sweet as a Nuckin fut, got up early last Friday, day off so unusual, z needed me, removed and cleaned throttle body and icv, lubricated throttle actuator (?), checked all pipe work and found a big split in inlet pipe, also main induction pipe from filter looked bit perished. Replaced both pipes then found oil leak from rocker cover ! Turned out some gorilla had stripped the threads on 5 bolts(took it to garage to have 5 helicoils drilled out and fitted coz it's better done once . So there I am , tea in hand thinking ' while I'm dirty and making a mess I should change the diff and tranny oils (I brought the oils in June when I got the car) that went very well. Incidentally, I paid 96 pence for 2 crush washers for the diff, from coopers bmw in Colchester after sopers of Lincoln told me they were £4.50 each plus posto_O. Anyhow, she liked all the attention and now runs sweet, gearbox is slicker than b4 and she don't leak air or oil any more,;) soon I think a sports cat exhaust , piper cross induction kit and a remap, nothing silly techno but should make her go even better. I'm happy she's fixed and have found that although I don't relish skinned knuckles and sh*t in my eye, I have finally bonded with the old girl, she's staying with us now for a long while. Taking her on holiday to jersey next week for a tootle round the island, bless her, cars coming too =))

Jolly good, glad you sorted it, root cause would have been the air leaks but no harm in cleaning the throttle body and ICV you now know what state they are in. Given the age of our cars it is expected the rubber pipes will have seen better days so well worth going through all of them and replacing any showing signs of perishing and cracking. Well worth investing in a bottle of Gummi-Pflege to treat all the body rubbers around the hood and windows, it restores the rubber and keeps it supple preventing leaks happening

Thanks Colb, gummi pflege ordered. To be sure the best place for rubber is not under a car bonnet for 19 yrs. Google news is I had a good look all over and as far as I can see there are no other problems, all bushes etc are fine, there is a wheel bearing that sounds a little dodgy but I'll get that sorted b4 mot at end of October. :nurse:
