Do all 1.9 140 hp UK have LSD?

I am getting conflicting info trying to get the correct oil for my diff oil change.
Real OEM shows a LSD for my chassis number
BMW parts told me oil should be OSP SAFXO ...this seems to translate as oil for no LSD
OPIE oils show a choice of x2 LSD and Non LSD.
Getting the wrong one is potentially harmful.??
At these rate I will be better off leaving my 21 yr old diff oil in place.
All I know at present is I need a 75W-90 synthetic oil that is grade 5 (what ever that is lol)

I don’t believe all had the LSD.
The vin decoder tool should assist you to find out what options your car had fitted but it’s more fun to go do some skidding in the name of science :racecar:

After checking using the vin decoder it seems I have S214A Automatic stability control (ASC+T) ..... So no LSD??
Also with car jacked up one wheel spins the opposite direction when in neutral.

You are looking on the decoder for:

S209A Differential Lock 25

RealOEM is not 100% tailored for your chassis number. It operates around the sub-series, which for a 2.2 would be CN12 for a RHD/Euro build. So it will show options possible if you have a CN12 without knowing exactly which ones you have. That's what the VIN decoder is for.

If you have a 1.9 it's pretty much nailed on you have no LSD. The 1.9 facelift Sport version would have it but you don't see many of those and your's looks like a pre-facelift from the profile picture. Sport is a more likely option on 2.2s and 3.0s.

Prior to that it was only available on the 2.8, first as an option from ‘98 and then becoming standard on that model in ‘99

Nope. Only with the Sport model for the 1.9/2.2, although standard on the 3.0. No idea on the 2.8 facelift which was a short term facelift model.

That's an open diff. A Torsen such as on my 2.2i Sport doesn't play to the rules and turning one wheel does not result in any movement from the other. A 'proper' hard LSD will turn both wheels in the same direction. Torsen LSDs use a torque sensing system - hence Tor-sen.

LSD (25% locking action) was a "Special Equipment" option on the early Z3 1.8 and 1.9. ASC + T became an option (£490.00) in Jan 97.

It is claimed that the Torsen is 25% too, but I'm sceptical as to whether a figure can be put on a somewhat variable device. I've read a couple of description of the mechanism but have yet to quite grasp the finer points.

The type you describe for the early models would surely exhibit the classic response to rotating one wheel and the other following it in the same direction?
