Dilemma. Paint or sell?

Well the results are slightly in favour of painting the Z3, 85% to a mere 15% for buying a Z4
This afternoon I'm off to look at a 3.0 sterling grey Z4, ///M seats and 19" alloys.
I won't be doing much more than having a quick look when I pull up on the drive at @gookah's, then the work will start on the Z3
I've got it booked in for paint, so I'll be stripping and doing some prep this week ready to drop it off next Saturday. So it looks like it's going to be a keeper for a very long time.
All the underneath will get the full treatment at the end of the year and I need to sort some rust and paint in the engine bay. I figured if I went for a Z4 I would always be wanting to make improvements like I've done to the Z3 which has taken 9 years between both. I've got a lot of rare parts for the Z3 and spent quite a bit over the years collecting. I don't think I'll have as much time or money over the next 5-10 years to do what I'd want with a Z4 so I'll be keeping the Z3. Hopefully I may look into getting a cheap daily next year so I don't need to use the Z3 as much.

When taking it apart have loads of containers and mark what the fittings are from.so you don't get too many splinters when you are scratching your head working out what went where.

Having stripped it down before I'm pretty good knowing what goes back where but I will keep stuff marked just incase. I wonder how many screws will be left once it's all back together?!

I have the same dilemma . My 1.9 Z3 has just gone through its MOT. I have sorted a few things out and everything seems pretty good with car at the moment . Clutch bites with the pedal far up so that might need doing at some time. The engine seems good with no smoke and 87K miles. I can get the whole car vinyl wrapped or approx £1k which is very tempting as every panel has scratches on. I have just spent £700 on new soft top so the car is turning into a money pit.
Car cost me £1300 . I have spent £130 on service parts and new battery £700 on new roof . New alternator £100. New thermostat +fluid £30. Paint for DIY fix £60 . Seat bushes fix £20. X4 Tyres £450. New cat + fixing £110
So far the car owes me £2900 so with wrap £3900... Getting an expensive hobby . I am very tempted to get the full wrap at the good price of £1k.

I daren't add up what the mods I've done have cost me, but they have been over the past 9 years and I would get a good amount back if I sold them. The car cost me £1100 after I'd sold a few bits I'd already got so I picked it up very cheap with the view that I could spend some money on it and it still be a cheap car. It's had a new roof at £300, 2 new sills at £230 and a 2 front wings at £120. So it would stand me at £1750 then add the cost of the respray it's still comes in just over £4000. There are some bits I've probably missed and the rest is just standard stuff like tyres, brakes etc that would be changed anyway.
If it's your hobby then why not? I don't spend all my money down the pub or going to the football. I've been in the golf industry for the last 20 years and if you think this is an expensive hobby you should see the amount some of them guys spend! My mates think I'm stupid spending on it and then I say how much did your run of the mill everyday car cost? They soon shut up when they find out it's double or triple the amount of mine. They are old cars now and will always need money and work, I could easily go and spend 5-10 grand on a newer boring car but then there's no enjoyment in that for me. I've not bought it this way, I've built something I'm proud of and when people comment about it there's no better feeling than saying I've done it myself.

Absolutely spot on Dave. When I stopped fishing 10 years ago I took up a much less costly pastime in an MX5 , then a Z3 and now my Z4.
Many of my mates in the local fishing club spend £6-7,000 on a fishing pole and compete in matches where they might £100- 150?
I know where my money is better spent mate. Your car is great and only going to get better.
