My wife's VW Golf 2litre GT TDI had the engine fault sign come up on the dash last Friday, looked up in the handbook and quote - catalytic converter problem take it to the dealer for investigation.
Anyway took to my local garage I use for non BMW servicing and repairs. They plugged the code reader in and four faults came up one of which was Glow Plug Fault cyl #1. Faults were cleared with the proviso to return as soon as any fault sign reappeared. Back again this morning fault reappeared. Straight back to garage and only one fault came up - Glow Plug Fault cyl #1. The lads explained the repair and showed me a sample of the replacement glow plugs. The idea would be to replace all four items, not individually which makes sense.
What I didn't realise is that glow plugs aren't just for cold starting a diesel engine but are part of the emissions setup via the ECU. You learn something new every day.
It was also pointed out that on very rare occasions the glow plugs can snap in two, they look a very femur construction being made from a thin metal casing. Hopefully it won't come to that problem.
