My wife's VW Golf 2litre GT TDI had the engine fault sign come up on the dash last Friday, looked up in the handbook and quote - catalytic converter problem take it to the dealer for investigation.
Anyway took to my local garage I use for non BMW servicing and repairs. They plugged the code reader in and four faults came up one of which was Glow Plug Fault cyl #1. Faults were cleared with the proviso to return as soon as any fault sign reappeared. Back again this morning fault reappeared. Straight back to garage and only one fault came up - Glow Plug Fault cyl #1. The lads explained the repair and showed me a sample of the replacement glow plugs. The idea would be to replace all four items, not individually which makes sense.
What I didn't realise is that glow plugs aren't just for cold starting a diesel engine but are part of the emissions setup via the ECU. You learn something new every day.
It was also pointed out that on very rare occasions the glow plugs can snap in two, they look a very femur construction being made from a thin metal casing. Hopefully it won't come to that problem.

Good news today, the four glowplugs changed out without any problem and after visual inspection the #1 cylinder item was obviously on the blink and causing the alert on the dash.

Good to hear Pete, modern, pencil thin Glo-plugs can be a pain snapping and/or stripping threads. Nice to see they all came out ok. I always apply a bit of Copper grease on the threads when I fit new ones, just in case I ever need to revisit them. This is something modern "Technicians" fail to think about, it's al about the money today.

Tony.

Used and trusted on down hole tools in the Oil & Gas biz ....

Definitely Mike, but so many of the people today only think about today, and tomorrow isn't their problem. Just how the ex Halfords guys where I work think.:( I will not miss them.

I've got a tin of Copper Slip anti seize grease in the garage which I brought home from Oman when I was in charge of a Well Services Workshop where we used it all the time. Great stuff for putting on bolt threads.

I wouldn't be without it Pete.

It was a Shell Opco, PDO (Petroleum Development Oman), worked in Oman for a total of 19 years. Started in construction based in Mina Al Fahal, the last thirteen in Fahud where I moved into Well Services. Great place, I kept a Suzuki Katana 1100SZ which I bought out there in the workshop. Used take it out for run down to the Fahud airstrip a couple of times a week on the only bit of tarmac road, used to get a few visitors to have a look at it, of course had to start it up for them. Shipped it home, its still tucked up in the garage, I haven't had on the road for a while.
