Afternoon all,

Question about diagnostic ports on my BMW Z3, 1.9, 1997. Where is the diagnostic port located? I have a OBDII reader will this work with my car? If not any advice as to where to buy the correct kit for the job? Might be a better idea to do that anyway as I'll need the software.

Thanks

You need the converter to the circular test port thats under the bonnet to access all systems.

Ebay is where i got mine not sure if i managed a uk seller at the time but it works fine try
ebay item 400595599237
Manchester seller.

bmcables do the complete kit (about £30) - cables and software for your laptop, includes software to code too (though in order to use the coding software you need a 64bit processor).

I got mine from ebay - seller cable-shack. Prompt email responses for support and everything works as it should. Software can be difficult to install with some suppliers but this was straight-forward. You'll need an old laptop unless you don't mind getting your best one mucky. Well worth having proper diagnostics in my view.

yes, you need the blue cable with the round plug addapter, the software comes with the cables, though if you can find the cables i have a spare set of discs with the software.

i brought the discs to use with a bmtechnics cable, it didnt work so i ordered the cable and blow me it came with another set of discs.

Looks like the cables themselves are around £30 so went with bcables as you suggested. Should be here by weekend and I can diagnose why it's running a but lumpy. Thanks for all the advice.

mine does that, always has. it did improve after i changes the cam sensor (think this shows up as a phasing error with inpa diagnostics) the M44 engine does suffer with sticking valves (hydrolic lifters get stuck, it doesn't do any harm though but does get worse the colder it gets)

Diagnostics turned up from bcables on Friday, managed to hook it up today. I used DIS and it found one code which I'll start another thread for. I couldn't seem to get INPA working. Not sure if it works on 1997 cars though?

yes it should, you need to select older models (think its shift and F6, then E36. inpa is the easiest way of checking codes, the codes are very accurate too, though sometimes a little vague (like for instance my cam shaft sensor error is described as a phasing error, but if you think about it - it is just that. you could describe the valve timing as phasing) the error i had to deal with recently was - pump valve wiring harness, turned out to be the power feed coming from the abs module to power the pump had failed so as you see it was spot on just a bit vague in a roundabout sort of way, prob due to it being translated from German. to use inpa you need to connect your car before booting inpa and make sure you have your ignition switched on.
if in doubt send me a message with your issues and we can work them out.
