So my car was in for it's first oil service yesterday and of course you get a little video nowadays, which is nice for your 320 notes. Anyway according to the technician, my rear tyres have 4mm of tread which means they are 70% worn. In my book if they start with 8mm they are 50% worn, not 70%. Who is right?

That's true Gaz, so then it would be 62.5% of the legal tread used not 70%. I just reckon they either can't do the maths or want you to change early.
In reality I change between 2 and 3 mm so probably another 3000 miles left if I don't sell the car first.

I don’t think the ‘worn-ness’ (is that a word) is based on the mm of tread left..it’s on the tyres capability to grip, clear water etc. I usually change mine at 2-3mm as handling becomes noticeably different especially on my heavy Merc

The dealers do try it on, a month ago my E46 went in for an airbag change, BMW safety recall, they did their once over on the car and found nothing wrong except one tyre at 4mm which is good for some time yet. This morning I got an e mail reminding me,
" Amber items should be attended to in the near future in order to keep your BMW in peak condition, and with safety in mind, we would like to invite you back to reassess your vehicle."

1.6mm over 3/4 of the width of the tyre.

Driving at speed (69.9mph M'Lud) with just 1.6mm on a modern wide tyre and it doesn't take much of a puddle to get you aquaplaning. I like a good set of tyres.

I don't mind getting a letter or an email from main dealer to remind me of something. Nothing wrong with them touting for business as long as they don't kick the ar*e out of it.

for what it is worth I had mine replaced earlier this year before the scottish run in April and I measured them at the time and though they were around 2.5-3mm with the car on the drive and me scrabbling under it. Once the car was in the air and the tyres off it was apparent that some areas where more like 2-2.5

My car drives perfect, no sign of camber issues etc.

I remember the old days when I used to buy part worn for my vauxhall viva... now I think anything less than 3mm and get them changed.
