Well after getting prices /inspection from various gearbox' specialist'
Most of who didnt inspire confidence i finally took a chance on a place in huddersfield as i got better vibes from my visit to there place.pricewise they were all within £100 of each other Dropped off tues and collected today .final bill inc doing propshaft bearing and flexijoint £1575 +vat .cant fault the service so far . drove home and everything seems well .fingers crossed.
Just gotta have a brake service mon and were all set for eurotrip come next friday .
Just cleaning it now as we have had a saraha dust /rain storm over here

Top service mate, thats a very quick turn around for a box rebuild.
 
That's got to be a relief,getting it done before your euro excursion with Bill.
I'd have done the same ie keeping the car and getting the repair sorted,it's a cracking sounding motor :thumbsup:.

Was it a rebuild or an exchange?
I was reading up some more on slush boxes and it seems that changing fluid on high mileage boxes really might cause more harm than it solves. That makes me think that BMW are trying to get you to buy a new box after 100k by making them sealed for life (i.e. 100k). After that people think I should change the fluid and bang. Your box is dead shortly after because the friction material on one of the pressure plates wears/burns out or thinner new fluid gets through worn seals.

I think I'd rather change the fluid every 15k than run it to the 'end-of-life' limit.
Having done 54k I don't know if it's too risky now to change the fluid.
 
Great to see your sorted, Notice you needed to bring it over the border to Yorkshire to get it fixed!
 
Cheers everyone.to ans the question .they stripped my box out and replaced worn parts inc torque converter.
Bmw wanted £3600+vat to supply a new box.
The company i used seem genuine and trustworthy.
Time will tell.

That's a good price including the torque converter.

When buying an auto I budget for a box overhaul at some point over 100k (or in the case of some DSG and the Audi Mutitrinic a lot less!) - some last much longer, I guess it depends on usage.
