I will admit to being just a tad conflicted if I am honest . . . I'm starting from the base point that I think it should be the Police doing the Police's job. That being said, I dont think theres enough of them, and they cant be in all places at all times.

I do think its a good idea to be able to flag up flagrant and dangerous transgressions, so people dont 'get away with it'. Yeah. Dont mind that.

I'm not sure I'm quite so okay encouraging a load of pious and self entitled karens (& . . . kens?), trying to be vigilantes running around looking to film every minor transgression. I'd quite like submitted video footage to include the run-up, so the Karens arent tempted to provoke the behaviour and just neglect to submit that bit.

Accepted theres a line between those two options, and I dont know where that line is.

But flagrant and especially dangerous breeches -yes, no problem with using that footage to assist the Police.

And yes, I would check the recorded speed I'm doing BEFORE submitting (I SHOULD be okay, honest M'Lud).
 
Best option is to not display your own speed and coordinates ”on screen” for your own protection.

I'm sure I've read that if you submit footage that is used in a prosecution you would need to attend court to back it up ,

Agreed, and I'll add if the police appeal for footage pertaining to an incident that has occurred - but not for people to just submit anything they see.
It would be the thin edge of a wedge, what next when this becomes common place ?

Also when footage is submitted I think they also want some from before and after the event to make sure no one is goaded into doing something,, or forced into corrective behaviour.

Remember seeing a vid about a road safety gent/ legal chap not recommending you to have a dash cam - I'll try and find it.

However, re the police use of footage sent by members of the public, I often wish I had a dash cam and I could do that. If people are driving dangerously they should be prosecuted.

I have a dash cam and purposely didn't get one with a GSP so that the speed was not logged. Its for accident/insurance purposes and got it after nearly being cleaned up one Sunday afternoon on a remote rural road. No witnesses, so it would be just a them against us stories time.

The Police here have been known to go through dash cam footage when they pull over a speeding driver or after an accident. Then fine them for as many wrong doing's as they can. So mine has loop recording that covers the last 15 minutes of driving.

There is a long rural road near by that is a bit hilly and twisty and is a main route. It has a high accident rate. There are a local group that want the speed limit reduced from 100 kpm to 80 kmph. They also get out in their cars and drive through the road in groups of 2 or 3 well spaced out cars and travel at a max of 80 kmph and take all corners very slow. They are fully armed with dash cams and love sending in footage of aggravated drivers overtaking them, supposedly at high speed. It takes all sort of people to make up a world.

With the advancement of car safety features, I'm wondering when dash cams that log speed just become part of the normal features of new cars and you can't turn them off.
 
That last point has been on my mind for a while Murray. A mate of mine has a camera in his van and just before Christmas it came to his aid when a car came to a Tee junction and pulled out without stopping or, obviously looking properly. It damaged the side of his van thankfully not seriously but his footage made the car driver own up as being responsible.

Probably wont be neccessary, as from 2022 all new cars are to be fitted with speed limiters and black boxes that will record details of speed, steering, braking etc. The police will have access to these when needed. You will be able to turn off the limiter if you wish, however the box will still record the details. When theres a collision they'll examin both vehicles boxes and apportion blame.

Well fingers crossed it’ll make all the speed cams redundant, all the local forces will have to raise their extra cash some other way. Honestly can’t see it happening in my lifetime of driving because they’ll have to plug the enormous hole in the economy after covid and thats the sort of road user update that’ll be put on hold till something like 2035 or longer. Not just that, it’s so innovative they’ll find a thousand reasons not to do it.=))
 
Great for accidents and insurance claims etc (as long as you're not the villain) Why would you summit to the police? Just remember we are all capable of bad driving and making mistakes, just remember YOU may be on the receiving end of this one day.
