I've been considering a dash cam but the choice and costs vary so much I haven't got a clue on the best option, I know loads of you have tried various ones and any advice would be very welcome, I don't mind spending a few quid as long as its worth it, but I don't want to fork out for a lemon.

Your opinions and advice would be "as ever" appreciated,

Thanks in advance
Niall

May be one thing to consider is the Base.
If it has a sucker pad followed by the camera below how much room will all that take up on your windscreen.
Which is why I purchased a small dash can to fit above the rear view mirror and the best thing is the Base is left behind as the camera unplugs.

Best of these is you can buy a spare base and power lead and easily move the camera between cars. Decent quality video too as posted last week after the Sunday meet. You can even get a spare mount and lead and swap it from forward facing to rear facing in seconds.

Niall this is mine can't fault it and it has GPS and the software is brilliant showing route taken and speeds £89 Halfords also has WiFi so I can down load to my Tablet or Android (picture quality superb also)

Don't know if you knew Steve, but you can buy a spare mount and power cable for your cam and mount it facing rearwards so that you can move it to record from the rear with ease. Also the blue light which flashes when recording can be a little bright during darkness, and yours will be in full view where it's mounted, I covered mine with a tiny piece of blue insulation tape cut and applied over the LED even though it's hidden behind the rear view mirror. It is still visible but not distractive in any way.

I've looked and asked a few suppliers for an extra based but no one are able to supply one so I gave up

Thanks guys I've had a look at these online and this looks spot on for my needs.

Thanks Tony.
Order placed
You need to have a spare power cable too Steve. I had one for my VW Touareg a couple of years ago and still have it. The camera we use in Florida, I have just fitted in Shirl's Eos, but I have found a spare power lead for it on eBay.

some insurers offer discounts on premiums for dash cams, while others insist on gps capability before excepting evidence from cams. yes its a mine field, but a good piece of mind, the plus to all of this is sometimes you can catch the most amazing things and some times just down right funny.
get one with a wide as possible lens, some say 110 deg while some are as much as 140 degrees.

If you're into dogging, make sure the camera doesn't record what happens in the cabin =))

or make sure it is recording in the cabin and sell it on the internet=)) though to be fair you would have to be quite creative in a zed:whistle:
