The Key fob is showing signs of wear and the area around the large top circle very loose (like bits come off)

there's your answer. Bought something similar for mine several years ago, still holding up well. Just need to get them cut (by your friendly neighbourhood competent key-cutting bloke) and swap the internals over. DON'T lose the tiny little chip that's in there, that'll be the immobiliser bit. Or try this perhaps. Up to you.

I refurbished my keys earlier in the year as you can see from attached link to my thread. If your key is the same it's very easy, but as mentioned above don't lose the chip!!
