Cutting holes?

I'll start by saying that I'll probably never get around to doing this, it's more an "art of the possible" question.
I've been watching Nathans Garage Mutt series on YouTube - he basically dropping a VW Beetle body on a Z3 chassi - I'm amazed by the amount of cutting he could do to the Z3 without affecting strength.

So my question is, what would be involved in cutting some holes for speakers, through the "parcel shelf" to the boot?

Having had a quick look there on mine my first impressions would be no as I think the rear of the boot is at an angle to the rear shelf I think below that will be above the petrol tank somewhere and not into the boot.

On the angles section, closest to the bottom of the window would just go straight into the boot.

it’s not very thick so I wouldn’t have thought it would be very structural

But if you did that, the only time you would benefit is with the roof closed

if you have the roof down, or a hardtop on, then the speakers will be covered
