One day this past week I observed two strange things:
1) cruise failed to engage on the first drive of the day. Had always worked flawlessly beforehand.
2) the gear display when switching to manual mode did not replace the trip meter, though up and down shifts worked. Never seen this before either.

Poking through various forums came up with a lot of similar stories regarding inoperative cruise control though many of them come back to things like brake light bulb type and overall circuit, clutch/brake pedal switches, fuses, cruise retrofit troubleshooting, etc. Went through all the relevant items and can't find anything wrong. Also pushing every button, turning every knob doesn't turn up any other inoperative electrical devices. Scan tool finds no codes.

The gear display works at least upon initial start of the car and still stationary. As soon as I move (reverse from parking spot, shift back to D and then over to M, it does not display the initial "5" or M#, just the trip meter mileage.

The two issues occurring at the same time out of the blue seems likely indicative of a common root cause. But my research hasn't led me to a smoking gun yet. Any ideas?
