Hi,

My son is engaged to an Irish lass and they are thinking of getting married in Ireland on new year's day 01/01/2017! My wife and I will make a full trip of it visiting England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, France, Italy, etc. as we might as well make the most of it while we are away [so far from Australia].

I was wondering how hard it is going to be to get there at a reasonable price and then move/fly around, find accommodation and all that during that time of the year. Any suggestions and tips will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

That sounds a great adventure @Cooper :p
How long are you planning on being away from home :)
It sounds amazing :)
What a start to a new year ;)

I might as well be away for a whole month! Depends on the cash $$ situation and ability to travel while over there. Thanks @Shelly

Good for you @Cooper :p
What a experience for you all ;)
And a wedding to go to too :)
Something lovely for your family to look forward too ;)

Easy to get around ,you need a hire car ,you can sail to Ireland from Wales very cheap ( if you crew yourself lol )

There are many websites you can use for accommodation - personally I use http://www.booking.com/index. The advantage is you can book well in advance and, if you change your mind for whatever reason, you can cancel (usually 24 hr notice but there are exceptions) without penalty.

I have many Irish friends, the wedding will be wonderful, but prepare for a two day hangover.

My advice for the Uk part of your trip.

Trains are expensive so hire a car if you want to see multiple areas.

But not for London, driving and parking in London is not easy.

So if you're flying into London get a B&B somewhere near a tube station and get around London on the tubes all day for £11

Then hire the car once you've left London.

Nearer the time put up how many days you are here and what your must see places are and we'll all help out with advice.

As Jonco said, booking.com is easy and efficient to use.

And bring a warm coat.

@Cooper you could do a lot worse than booking your UK wide visit at the Premier Inn chain. Not luxurious but clean, decently appointed and mostly next to pubs for your meals and they are inexpensive. They are all over the UK and would make a good stop for a couple of days in each of your chosen locations.

I suspect you could strike a good deal with a number of stops.

Was about to suggest exactly the same thing. Premier Inn are great and if you speak with them rather tHan booking online telling them your wanting multiple bookings around the country they'll sort you out with a bit if a deal.

Stayed in a few up and down the Country over the years and always found them spot on. The vast majority have all had the redec upgrade to.

The thing is with them you know exactly what your getting. The rooms are great. I wouldn't want my 2 weeks summer holidays spent in one but to travel around or a one or two night stay there perfect.

A Zed will be great to accomplish the tour, but not during the January...

use the trains if your savvy they can be a cheap way around i can get from Crewe to Edinburgh for 17 quid just dont travel at peak times.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far.

It is all but confirmed that we will be in Ireland for the wedding on the 12th January 2017. So, I will take a month off and see the sites. We will definitely see Ireland, England, Wales, Germany, Venice, Paris, Prague. I hope to catch up with several forum members while I am there and I owe a few hours with helping @spurs fan in a coupe clean up his shed and pull a few cars to bits - if he does that during winter! He has shipped parts to me at great inconvenience to himself and I am grateful. Wonder if @hard top will want to see me??? Hahaha. Too bad the weather is no good for cruising that time of the year.

Anyway, if you think of some good places to visit, have any links to interesting blogs and such please don't be silent - shoot me a message. We really like castles and old buildings and such. The wife is somewhat ill so she cannot do much physical stuff like skiing. Effectively, we will see many of the 'must see' things and places and stay for 1-2 days each place if possible. We are likely to base ourselves at a friends place near Castle Howard and run around from there while in England. We will fly to the other places and keep moving forward until it is time to go home.

Cheers.
