Reading this article earlier about autononous vehicles and effects on congestion

Seems entirely plausible - but one part struck me as not, unless someone can explain.

How can not owning the vehicle lead to less congestion ?? If 100 000 people wish to travel at the same time regardless of the vehicle ownership, there will still be 100 000 vehicles on the roads at that time.

Obviously autonomous vehicles will lead to more congestion, as we humans try and often find ways around congested areas. These wont do that but just join the back of a queue. I just hope they leave the requiate distance from the vehicle in fron, allowing me to tuck into the gap safely. They'll then drop back further to leave the same space

Which is what they try to teach you on a driving "Speed Awareness" course when you have someone behind itching to get past. Let them go and leave a gap, which rewards someone for crawling all over your boot lid. That's how I see it anyway.

Can't be doing with it mate, just another form of public transport for me. If I want to go out I'll get in my car and go, if I want an autonomous car then surely I'd need to order in advance A Concorde moment, for me.

Yep - had one the other night going home, couldnt even see his lights or bonnet badge in my RVM, just let him go as didnt want them taking risks that could end up badly for someone.

I sometimes wonder how many more years we'll have of pleasant relaxing motoring

Driving is just what it says, if you think your a good driver get your ability programmed into an autonamous vehicle, should be just like driving yourself. NOT. These vehicles will be programmed from the idiots we find on the roads already. Anyway they'll do away with the driving ability as we know it. God help us trying to cope with a broken down one in the middle lane, or single track narrow lane. Maybe we'll be able to just switch it to self drive if it has the means NOT. The human brain connot be replicated in any shape or form because every brain can change its mind in a nano second depending on the individual's experience's that means these cars brains will have to lean over a considerable period and that's an insurmountable problem in itself. "Not rocket science" or is it.????? Not for me I think drivers might push them up the kerb where it will be programmed to cut out untill someone comes with the right PASS WORD to get it going again. One good point though, who pays the speeding fine for one of these vehicle.
The whole concept worries me, especially if the wife gets one and reverses into a gab I say can't be done. Could put unchangeable destination in her's to Scotland and get some time off.




Gonna be the best way to go down the pub and back home though( @hard top )

Example, a self driving car comes into a situation that it has to make a decision…
Slippery road, the car lost traction, and is heading towards a cliff.
the only escape from certain death is to drive onto a fence break it and land safely in the field.
what will a self driving car do?
Another example.
driving through traffic suddenly an old lady carrying an infant jumps in front of you between two large lorries.
who will the self driving car protect? The old lady and the infant or the driver? Who will take the calculated risk to hit the lorries in order to save two people?
And who will be liable for all these accidents?
The driver? The software? The car?

This has been discussed many times( not here ) and not sure yet how they have addressedthe ethical part of the software.

In a certain scenario it comes down to - does they car save you and kill they other folks ( crossing the roads etc. ) or does it miss them and kill you instead ?

Who wants to travel in a vehicle that will potentially kill you ? Who wants to produce a vehicle that will potentially kill inocent bystanders ?
This is one of the reasons we have rencently had all the priority changes to the highway code/ road traffic laws - in preperation for autonomous vehicles.

Also are we gong to be able to take over ? If so we'll still need a licence. If its the case how will folks keep their skills up to date ? I know we're all drivcing gods on here but some folks out there have limited ability now and they hone their skills frequently atm by driving, how will they cope when they havent ' driven ' for months/ years ??

Scary stuff tbh.

If an autonomous vehicle has a means of passenger "override" where will it be? In the centre? Will the front passengers both have access where they could both want to go in different directions?
