Started looking for a Z3 last year. I also have a Porsche 928S4 which is a wonderful car, but can't be said to be fun, until you're likely going to jail.
Found what I was looking for in a Japanese auction 2002, Sport suspension, numerical high rear end with LSD, offset wheel, sport seats, manual roof (I've pulled the auto opener out of my5 series wagon), manual transmission and a hard top. As a bonus it only had 32,000 Km. The car came with the 2.2 which, given the desire for fun at legal speeds, is just about perfect.
Lots of little things needed doing, tires, seat sliders and NA stereo and new speakers, were done immediately. The soft top also needs to be done, a little more angle on the seats, lights, and a sub woofer will complete the car.
It's been everything I hoped and I've enjoyed the care immensely this summer.
