I think Bill was referring to the fact your car is 4 cyl. (1.9 in your avatar) and he was referring to a 6 cyl.

I have just noticed that I forgot to put the link to ECP on my earlier answer, Now corrected and repeated here.

Do not under any circumstances by the intermotor one, maybe I just got unlucky and received 2 faulty sensors (both intermotor), however when fitted with these sensors, the car would not start at all, tested both sensors on two Z3s and had the same issue.
Here's a video on how to do the job. Not complicated at all. If I can do it, anyone can! (not my video but it covers everything quite well)

Direct from BMW I'm afraid.
I'd call your local dealer first and ask for a price.
Then I'd give BMW Sopers a ring and find out how much the part is there, it's worth mentioning to them that you're part of Zroadster.org which should entitle you to a little discount.
As the sensor is relatively small, they should be able to post it to you at no extra cost.
I should warn you that the sensor isn't cheap, mine was around £120 However, the way I see it is my original sensor was on the car for 20 years, if I get a good quality, genuine replacement, it should last the life of the car.
Unfortunately I don't have a part number to hand, but if you ring them up, give them the last 7 digits of your chassis number they should be able to locate the part easily. Make sure it's the cam sensor that you get and not the crank sensor, for some reason part stores seem to confuse the two?! Don't know how.

I fit the new sensor, cleared the codes using my cheapo code reader then disconnected the battery for 20 minutes or so, came back and went for a drive, scanned for codes again and none were present. 
I was once told that disconnecting the battery resets the mixture adaptation values, the validity of of this I wouldn't be able to comment on... It was said to me by the same mechanic who suggested that I lightly tap the abs module with a hammer to free the bushes....
@t-tony should be able to confirm whether disconnecting the battery would be worth doing as I'm not 100% sure.
Fuel efficiency when I bought the car was beyond hideous. I was averaging 17mpg. I assume the mixture was running rich. Once the sensor was changed, fuel efficiency crept up again and now sits at an okay 33mpg.

I must say, I can't really call the mpg in mine terrible, although not a patch on a modern car, it's respectable. It will be interesting to see what effects I feel when I change mine out.

It's not true - all settings,codes and adaptations are stored in non-volatile memory.
