Clock Spring/steering wheel boss

Hello All,

I've got an aftermarket steering wheel in my Z3. The boss I have (I assume) is for a full sized E36, where the inner circle of the clock spring is totally round. My clock spring has a flat section, and so I cannot use it on the boss.

Does anyone know of a boss that does accept a Z3 clockspring? Alternatively, can I use an E36 3 series clock spring, for the horn and self cancelling indicators?

I also have an aftermarket (wooden) steering wheel. The Z3 steering column spline is the same as an E36 3 series, don't know about any other models.
I bought a Mountney boss which I just couldn't get the slip ring (clock spring?) to fit. I ground the boss down, filed it, everything. The slip ring just wouldn't sit square because of the flat piece. I glued it in place but it didn't work as it was not central so just ripped off.
I threw that boss in the bin and bought an expensive OMP boss. This fits squarely on the slip ring but the screw holes still won't line up so it needs to be glued in place. Mine is OK and the indicator cancelling 'arm' does work.

It's important that the slip ring spring is around half way when installing. I wound mine all the way one way, then the other and counted the rotations. It's around 4 if I remember. Then wind it back half and install the ring.

There don't seem to be many choices with E36 bosses from what I found.

Remember that the slip rings are made to fit the OEM steering wheel. It is just a bit of wiring on a spring but they will all be different shapes depending on the wheel they were made for.
