I was taught never to be the aggressor but to stand up for yourself don't be bullied. While growing up this has served me very well. I have never started a fight and never will but I will always end one.

Like I was saying earlier in and ideal world with no violence I wouldn't need to adopt this attitude But we are far from that. I like feel comfortable that where ever I go I can look after myself and my partner and not feel threatened.

I can see where your coming from, but I've traveled a little and you must be living in a diffrent world to me as I have never felt threatened in fact quite the opposite I have felt welcome .Is it an Eniglish thing?its a world ,We make it ,let's make it ideal

This is an interesting discussion we've not had one like it in a while.

Miller, It must be an English thing. I also travel very regularly but most likely not as much as you, as I'm only 27. I have also seen a lot of the world and had some interesting altercations.

Along with my line of work I used to have briefs and de-briefs when entering certain country's, a lot goes on that you or I don't see. My point being there is a lot of hostility out there.

For example I went round California on a road trip with the better half and two occasions whilst in LA we found ourselves in a very hostile situation this was only in october. Its these situations that make me the way I am.

Yes I like a good debate except with my daughters which I can never manage, they can argue on a diffrent level to me.Walk away or slap lol.The biggest problem is see is that your saying and correct me if I'm wrong :we should all be good at violence?and then we would feel safe in a hostile situation?i can't get that,

Your halfway there, I guess from your responses you have never done any form of martial arts.

When I was a kid on my Karate licence (Wado-Ryu) The motto was "To defend myself or someone weaker"

You brand Martial Arts as Violent and a real bug bear of mine. A huge misconception. These martial arts teach self control, respect, discipline and preservation. You develop an inner self-confidence so they feel they don’t need to fight to prove themselves. It’s a paradox: you learn to fight so you don’t have to.

Sorry we digress

No you've misunderstood,I was generalising about the violence thing, and absolutely don't class folks who enjoy Martial arts a necessarily violent.my wife and my nieces all do and have done classes for years.Whati don't like is that being good at fighting makes you feel safe.if everyone was good at fighting would you feel safer. Its like the gun thing in America more guns make you feel safer ,but are you really?when I think how long I've been here and where I've been, I'm disappointed that you feel that there's so much hostility "out there"when I've encountered almost none.I find most everywhere you go people are like you and me getting on with their lives I may be wrong and in reality there all out to get me.lol.We meet guests every week and many times initially they can be a little removed but once you have a little chat and a laugh and they realise I'm not going to rip their heads off, unless they smoke in the hot tub it's all good.and yes Clarkson is a pillock

Totally agree @Lee I've never thrown a first punch kick or whatever, except in competition with like trained people for self improvement. I studied tiger claw hung fu under a black belt well respected in Asia in private lessons with some friends. As I said before it was not used for aggression but for the reasons you so aptly put in your post. As a little guy I was a target for bullies and would definetly avoid confrontation if at all possible. But, sometimes you have to protect yourself or someone being abused. So I congratulate you on your dedication. My kids have been taught how to avoid confrontation whenever possible but as the saying goes". Sh"t happens" my youngest son is ADHD and at 7 years old manhandled two male teacher who made the mistake of trying to restrain him after they had been advised by the school psychiatrist to let him walk off his frustration. He has taught himself restraint but will if attacked finish things quickly. JIM
