I think the outside tubes are present on all Z3's, it's the one on the inside that you have to retro fit if you are fitting OEM hoop. If you are fitting the "show hoops" you should be ok

Its what is underneath the foam filling you want to check to see if the tubes are there, you can remove the turret there are some screws hidden under small plastic round covers, flick the covers off take the screws out and the turret can be lifted with the seat belt still threaded through it. Then have a look underneath to see if the tubes are there. If they are then when you get your bling bars you will have to cut the foam out of the turret to allow the bars to slip through them. Try and make the cut as neat as possible. If you want to remove the turret to make the cuts then undo the seat belt bolt by the floor and unthread it through the turret and do the cutting off the car.

the steel tubes sticking up behind the seats is what you are looking for. ( picture courtesy of @Synclare )
When you retrofit factory roll barsone side goes in the tube other side goes into a bracket needing bolted on then you will usually get all this when buying a second hand set .
If you want to fit aftermarket ones usually you only need to have the tubes that are in the picture above.
I have put factory sets into our 97 and 99 zeds one had just a cap on the turret.
The other looked like yours like it wasn't meant to come apart but when took turret off tube was there turret had big bit of polystyrene like padding glued onto inside of it like what you ca see in your picture.

When I did mine there was no foam and just had to make hole larger in turret. Geoff

Thankyou all, will have another look tomorrow, what's the best thing to use to cut out the circle in the plastic bit for the hoop to slide in?

I would use a hole saw.

Forgot to take a photo but i've taken out the polystyrene stuff and there is now what looks like a plastic or metal 'cup' about two inches deep, is this what the hoops slide into or does that come out too?

I've got a set of "pretty but useless" show hoops - and the beige trim which has been qnawed to make the cross "roundlike" to accept the hoops.
- I took them off I as I needed the extra protection and fitted OEM ones ;-)

There is a rubber o-ring around the chrome to they look neat when fitted - may save you hacking your own trim....

There's a rubber bung in this side hole - you need this to access the bolt to pinch the chrome and hold it in.

All Z3's have the outer hoop tube holder as metioned above.

Be very careful if you remove the trim - the 3 tabs on the side that hold outer trim in are delicate. One of my snapped.

Make me an offer if you would like the hoops and trim. I've not got round to posting in the forsale section.

- the middle trim had a home made "sub" fitted that didn't work and was just awful, but the outer edges work for the hoops.

- I'm located between Luton/Bedford - happy to help fit on a weekend.

Either way, should be enough detail here to have helped.
