Just looking at a cheepir IOM which I can cart all my stuff back home when I eventually do leave. Got a heads up from a friend of someone selling a Honda CR-V 1999 £300 including tax but an automatic and has a dent on one of the panels no biggie if it looks sound can't say much at that price but am interested in TDM4 Freelander but asking £1200 no tax but can knock down some off, it has leather trim and ac. I know they are not the cheapest to run cars but fancy a small 4x4 for winter at home and for carting bigger items that can't fit in the wife's Polo.

Any thoughts on either vehicle?

Is the CRV a diesel? Had a 2008 CRV same engine well built ran well if a bit boring. Went back to BMW after the Honda for no reason other than love BM's

Old high mileage CR-V's often develop transmission problems Mark, transfer box and/or rear axle(Diff.) If you're unlucky enough to find this in a Freelander you can remove the rear drive propshaft and run it as a front wheel drive only, in case you didn't know that.

Tony.

Tax is no longer transferable on change of ownership

A bit different in the IOM. Same as they have no MOT. They have a lot more stringent test and no more testing after that. You have to be adult enough to maintain your vehicle and god help you if your running around in a death trap. You can be pulled over anytime by the police and ordered to go to a test centre for a check over.

The CRV can develop an clonking noise in the rear diff which a fluid change usually cures (must be the Honda fluid though). Had this fixed on 2 of them (but gen 2 models, not sure if different to the one you looking at). Easy to check by doing a tight turn slowly.

Properly reliable if dull to drive. £300 is cheap, they fetch more here.

They are not 'proper' full time 4wd but with M+S tyres you would have to go properly off road to actually get stuck.

Not to fussed about off road stuff with that kit but can you say if they handle snow ok @Dino D
I had no issue in snow when fitted with the Bridgestone Dueller tyres they are usually fitted with as standard (not that it snows often here in Kent). I felt brave so went up some untreated hilly roads and was great. Bearing in mind we don't scale any peaks here, just a few downs!

I've gave £200 for this. No jokes thanks lol!! spent £200 on it and a week tidying it as it was hanging.
Just got Jue a freelander. You can buy cheap reasonable ones for a few hundred quid. Just check as Tony says the Prop is there as people take them off when the transfer box starts to whine.

I had a W plate pretrol CR-V as a company car for a year. It was a good enough drive, but that VTEC engine drank like Rooney at a wedding.

Had a look at the CR-V for £300 I'm taking it. Looks a tidy car apart from a dinged front wing but sourced some on eBay for £35. Has a small blow somewhere on the exhaust but bits look cheap enough if it needs doing. Seen some leather seats as well but might be getting to carried away there.

That's a lot of car for £300 and executive spec too, you may even have heated seats - they hid the switches away on the dash behind the steering on the left side.
