I am trying to identify this rubber/foam boot that's part of the cold air intake. I have looked at all sorts of parts catalogue without success.

It's connected between an air scoop behind the driver's side front grill

And the plastic shroud above the radiator

This one? Dont worry about it. Just wrap some thermal proofing around it.

It’s completely shot, and I don’t think it’s even got the retainer I can see in your pic…

Just replace with some silicone hose with a metal spiral inside (otherwise it will deform and choke the engine each time you accelerate). It is part if the whole assembly, very expensive to replace or find a decent one.
i will be doing mine soon, just taking a small timeout from wrenching on the Z, I have to sell the wife's car and it is a total mess. Will be working on that for a while.

Well, number three on that picture looks like the intake hose, but nothing looks like the rubber boot I am looking for… I suppose the item is just part of the intake tube. The part I am after is something between parts 12/13 and 3 above. I am just not sure if it's sold as part of 12/13 or 3...

See in the picture above number 3 your hose at the end ( beside 12/13) you will see there is a line just up from the end that is the rubber end bit that pushes over 12/13 it is part of the hose.
Stephen.

Here is a picture of one off ebay this probably a bit more like what it should look like compared to yours.

Is there no way you could repair it for the time being until you find a decent condition one .

I believe the part I am looking for is not part of the hose itself , but either the intake or the hose the hose further up. I would like to have something original, but I could just go with Zephyr’s recommendation.

I am just a sucker for original bits…

Part is obsolete and specific to the 1.9 engines.
Answer from bmw is: part no longer produced, try to find some NOS sitting on a dealers shelve for part number 13711743351 or try part 13711743320 from an E36 that may or may not fit.
Pretty expensive for 130€ I was quoted, so personally I am going the samco way or
use this kit that I found used locally and get rid of all that bmw clever ideas to suck money from my wallet.

Yeah, I saw that @Zephyr, and will be following that one.

It's bizarre that realoem doesn't list those parts when I select my specific car (Z3 1.9 M44), but thy show up when searching for the part number 13711743320. The list of applicable cars are all 3 series E36, except for the Z3… 🤷‍♂️

The cheapest I could find is on eBay at £92.57: Genuine OE BMW E36 Cabrio Compact Coupe Air Filter Intake Tube 13711743320. It might be better to just replace the whole contraption with what you are looking at...

This will make the purists cringe but you can do a cheap fix with rain water pipe and a few elbows from Wickes - see pics. Remove the spiral winding and slip a section of pipe through sleeve and slot in. Did mine ~6 years ago - no problems with air flow.E228C7FE-CAFE-4F41-9A5B-5312298760B2.jpeg

I like that Colin

Tony.
