Wondering if Jim is near these fires, hope not, does anyone know ?

@ oldcarman are you near the fires :p
Hope your ok :)

There is another state between Alberta and Manitoba where I believe Jim and his family are, so he should be safe. That is of course if he is at home

Jim is safe at getting on for 1,000 miles away from the fires - no comfort for those that are not sadly.

Thanks Shelly, we're all safe thanks to our volunteer fire department that put out a huge wildfire that was burning towards town. Not the scale of Ft McMurray by any means but luckily no homes were lost. It's 32c and rising here today and everything is tinder dry due to lack of snow this winter. As @Jack Ratt And @Redline stated we're quite far from that particular fire but have six wildfires burning in our province at the moment and there is nothing but forest across the top of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba into Ontario so if the winds turn on the big fire it can go for hundreds or thousands is km's virtually unstoppable. There's a total ban on open fires in place but stupid people are still burning of winter ground cover without proper fire stoppers in place. JIM

Glad your safe Jim :p

Now we have to worry about all the smoke drifting in from Alberta so people with allergies to smoke are in a lot of trouble. The skies will haze over so the sun is blurred which keeps the temps down a bit but today is almost unbearable so even top down drives are a no no! And with no A/C it's only short trips into town for a Guinness I think! So there is an upside! JIM

Weather is really strange: you have 32C and we have 9C! Last year we had in beginning of May, 28C! You really don't know what temperature will be next week.
It's good to hear you're safe, Jim.

Strange weather here too in the 20's today but this time last week it was snowing

Just had a chat with the family who went home yesterday and they're saying the same Mike. Yesterday was a complete washout here, the day started with early morning thunderstorms at about 5.00 am and it was still chucking it down at midnight when I went to bed. Looks very nice near Lincoln today, better here, blue sky and sunny but very windy too.

Tony.

Pleased to hear that you are safe, Jim. Take care.

Mary

Thanks everyone we're safe and sound for now but we now have 18 wildfires in my province alone which is actually down from 60 last year at this time of year. Most are left to burn out themselves as long there's no threat to household. Now it's the smoke from the western fires which become a concern. It will be drifting in tomorrow. Canada is soooo much bigger than the UK and it's hard for most from other countries to fathum the sizes and distances one place is from another. We're collecting monie to send to the people of Ft. McMurray locally and through our Legion to donate and our Federal Gov't is matching all donations dollar for dollar! Hopefully we can make a small difference for the 180, 000 people evacuated so far! But we will do all that's necessary as I'm sure you would if the shoe is on the other foot. Thanks for the support!! JIM

@Geoff Crispin and @Shelly just an update on the wildfires burning in Manitoba and Ontario. There is one which originated in Ontario that has led to the evacuation of all residents around a couple of lakes in cottage country. So far no dwellings destroyed but the fire is moving at about 6 km per hour on a fairly wide front and last evening crossed into Mb. And today forced evacuating around Wallace lake about 2 hrs north of me. We're experiencing strong winds that fan the flames and we could very well lose a lot of our Boreal Forest as there are no natural breaks that they can fight from. If it ever gets south at least I have A river which it would have to jump. There are three other settlements up north of me and they are being advised that if the winds change they may need to evacuate. Hopefully the rain promised this week will help and it's times like this I don't mind not being able to get the top down. Trinity and I are just about to head out for a while. But it's starting to get fairly smokey out so may not go too far! Thanks for everyone's concerns. JIM

Hi Jim
Thanks for this update, we keep getting updates on the national news its just awful and hope that you are able to keep safe. They seem to think that it might have been started deliberately what have you heard ?

Regards

Geoff

Unfortunetly it may well be true. A lot of people rely on the pay they get from fighting forest fires by our gov't. Too many times these get out of hand and turn into infernos which cause deaths, lose of houses and forest! There are always those that will roll the dice and it is next to impossible to find out who started the devastation. As we haven't had any lightning storms to date it is most likely human error or set deliberately. They have evacuated 60 cottages from the Wallace Lake area but have not really gotten the upper hand on the fires as we have strong winds blowing but today and for the next several days we are expecting low temps and thankfully rain which will help immensely. Thanks for following along and for everyone's concerns for our safety. There is a lot of smoke in the air which causes it's own problems but with the rain it should clean the atmosphere considerably. JIM

Hi Jim
Money is the root of all evil, if it was started deliberated how can the person/s live with them selves ?
Lets hope that the wind drops and you get rain. Geoff
