My son was working 4 hours away on Wednesday for his company :p
And instead of taking his little work van with him he had to take a big white van , so he could fit all the equipment in it that he needed for the job , he left at 6 in the morning and got home at 11 at night. :)
So instead of putting the van on the drive , which already had 4 vehicles on it , he parked the van in the lay-by across the road from us ;)
And look what has been their the last couple of days from 4 o'clock until 9 in the morning .

That's a tad cheeky if the cones have not been put out for genuine roadworks. As long as you don't block a dropped kirb then street parking is a free-for-all.

Yes I agree :p
But the people across the road , seam to think it's their private parking spaces =))
Brandon has even had , when he's pulling out of our drive, one of the neighbours across the road say to him park in your driveway and not outside our house , and he's only parked their if we're had people round and he's come home and can't fit on the drive.
He's got a small car too a VW scirocco :)

Ask the Police to come and remove them Shelly as they're blocking a public space.

Tony.

That's an awkward one as nobody wants to fall out with neighbours but if that's a public layby then they have no right to block access without good reason you can't stop people parking outside your house as long as they are parked legally , you could always move the cones and park your car legally of course ;)

Those cones aren't cheap, I'm surprised somebody has left them lying around - suggest your son puts them somewhere safe for the owner before they are removed

I'd contact local council, ask about any works going on etc. then park there. But not wanting to cause a fuss with neighbours is good - keep the peace etc.
For the neighbours though, its easy to make sure he doesn't park there again - always be careful in these situations :)

Personally I’d have chucked the cones in the back of the van. Parked up and waited till the neighbours knocked on the door. Then had a full on conversation about the legalities of parking and exacttwhy we all pay bloody road tax.
Then tell them to do one politely of course

Not wanting to upset my neighbours and all.

But that’s me !!

We don't really know the neighbours across the road , as the drive is enclosed with hedges , so we don't see anyone when we get in the car and drive off . It's just annoying that they think it's their car parking spaces :p
I haven't got the time to play silly games =))

They purchased the house knowing the lay by was outside. Full stop.

A space like that is used on a first come, first served basis. I was about to say that these Neighbours don't appear to be overly neighbourly anyway.

Tony.

I think they thought the lay-by was included in the house price :p

Reminds me of towels and sun loungers ................................... ;)

Tony.

Not only Germans, back from Majorca a couple of weeks ago hotel only had brits staying and every morning when the doors to the pool area opened at 8 o clock where was a mad rush to the beds , watching from our sixth floor balcony it was ten minutes of fun before going for brekkies ,and at 9.30/10.00 o'clock still plenty of spare beds

I am sorry but I take the other view, so will play Devil's Advocate.
It annoys the hell out of me when people park in front of my house when they visit neighbours, and I get back and can't even park outside my own property, I end up walking, and having to go back out again later to re-park, just so they can just step in.

Where are the ones across the road supposed to park their cars, or their subsequent visitors?
It's not their fault that you have four vehicles on your drive and need to park a fifth, meaning they then no longer have space to park one..
That is the part that is not neighbourly, and that is probably how they are feeling,

It would wind me up too having a "big white van" blocking my view trying to get out of the drive onto the road.
Some places don't even allow parking of commercial vehicles in residential areas within the deeds, because of the issues between neighbours that they can cause.
Sorry if you dont like my view, but they probably wouldn't like these earlier views either.
Neighbourly action is about give and take, and so far there apparently seems to be only taker, and a number of enforced givers.

Reading between the lines, its sounds like you are upsetting more than just one person across the road, which is not going to do you any favours with the council or police, regardless of how legally allowed it may be.

As a public place Pete it's still a first come first served basis and no one has any right to "block" it with cones for any reason. I agree with your comment about the number of vehicles all the same. Just one of the many reasons I could never live in a built up area.

Tony.

Yes Tony, but as I said, "regardless of how legally allowed it may be" it winds people up and causes problems.
Stating legalities to someone does not help in situations like these, it just shows that one person has no intention of being reasoned with, or listening to the adverse effect it may have on the other party.
The worst thing, especially in New Build's is lack of parking, and is probably one of the biggest causes of neighbourhood disputes, because of neighbours and visitors parking in or blocking other peoples spaces, or what they believe should be theirs to pick first.

I, and probably many other people believe, that no matter how legal or not it actually is, it's an unwritten rule that it's the owner of the house that has first dibs to a space outside their home. That is the reasonable and neighbourly thing to allow, and I personally don't think that is an unreasonable viewpoint. what they are doing is their attempt to keep it clear for their visitors and getting their car out without a big white obstruction to their view of the road.

Other views are of course available.

Have the same kind of problem in my tiny village where my ///M and wife live but difference in our little community we are civilised about such things especially when yours truly has hogged a space with said vehicle under cover but when we have interlopers overnight not a problem as no one ownes any of the parking spaces and adult to make do as it’s not a permenant thing but do agree with Tony on this I could never go back to an housing estate even as nice as the last one I left for village life.

clear for their visitors

It is difficult Pete, I know. When we visit our son's home in Lincoln we have the self same problem. But you have said you can't park outside your house due to visitors at your neighbours not allowing you to park outside your own home. Yet you say the people with the cones are being "reasonable" by trying to keep it clear for their visitors. I can't get my head round that mate. Like I said I couldn't live in a town or city and this will only get worse as the number of vehicles increases. There's plenty of parking at the house we're selling ................... ;)

Tony.

ps. In my opinion Shelly's neighbours would've been better if they'd talked to them rather than plonking cones down.
