My 1.6 Diesel Cooper had the PSA engine in it, but I think they switched for a 2.0 BMW unit later on. Not sure if they have changed it back to PSA again...
The PSA engine is a good motor for power and economy. The worst thing you can do with one is pootle about looking for better MPG as all this does is encourage carbon build up which increases compression and causes the injectors to blow past their seals. A real pain in the ass.
In my humble opinion the French make better diesel engines than BMW and the best of the lot are Audi VW.
