Update. Went to work today and noticed when I left the car didn't start first time. Then later a lack of power. When I got home I put the code reader on and as I guessed it showed the sensor fault.
I put back the original sensor for the time being and on a small test run the car was back to normal. I replaced it as a code had come up on my code reader but no symptoms at all. I will call in tomorrow at my local bmw garage and order a new sensor from them. About £100 more I'm guessing. The new sensor will be the larger version like the febi. Reading on other forums the m52 engine seems very temperamental when it comes to cam sensors.
At least second time around it only took 15 minutes to change not 55
