I have had a Po340 code for the camshaft sensor come up. Not lit the eml light so far. I have read that cheap sensors are often rubbish so may go fo a genuine bmw part. Are there any other makes of quality sensors other than original bmw available?

If you get a Febi item from ECP you will see it has had a Bosch logo ground off but the part number is still there. Google the part number and you'll see it is a Bosch part.
This what I fitted in my Z3 around 10 years ago and it's still ok. Price back then was around £55-60 IIRC.

I only use OEM sensors; they have 2 year warranty and they work!!

Ecp don't list the febi sensor. Autodoc list febi for £25 that's £100 cheaper than a genuine bmw one. Seems too cheap 🤣 might give it a try as I have at least heard of febi.

May I ask something? Isnt a sensor just a magnet on a wire?
why not buy the cheap one?
What can possibly go wrong?
(Famous last words, I know, I know…)

I have read that some cheap sensors have a smaller magnet and don't always work. Plus a cheap magnet may lose its magnetism over time. I have seen sensors for my z3 from £10 to £130. It is hard to believe it costs 13 times more to make a genuine bmw sensor.

I used a Meyle one on my 2.2, it was £27. It's been ok for nearly 3 years, but will probably pack up now I've said that.

Cheap sensors are modelled on the original BMW part which was then subsequently upgraded by BM as they were prone to failure, but the non OEM manufacturers continue to copy the old part. The replacement BM version has a larger cross sectional area, hence why you should buy genuine BM or OEM.

Yes that's what I have read. I've just purchased a febi sensor and it looks to have the larger magnet. It will be interesting to see what the size of the one it's replacing is. No sign in the service history of a replacement so it could be 23 years old.

My M43 (facelift 1999) had a BMW stamped Delphi sensor. I replaced with same and has been perfect. Magnet was bigger on the replacement too

Usual rule for sensors is go oem, Bosch or Siemens, I have fitted Hass brand camshaft sensors to a 3 series in the past it never came back so must be still working ok.

Fitted the new one today. A bit of a pig to fit but got there in the end after about 50 minutes of swearing 🤣 the one I replaced was a bmw sensor. Thinner than the replacement febi sensor. Let's hope this one lasts 23 years like the old one. The first pic is the new sensor.

Makes you think it must be a very strong magnet.

Time will tell, I guess it must be working.
