New inlet camshaft sensor fitted, plus various other bits. Started perfectly to drive back from the garage...

This morning try to start the car, it 'starts' for about 2 seconds then dies.

Saying I'm rather p*ssed off is a bit of an understatement...

Only other thing they did related to the engine is to reroute the overflow pipe around. There was quite a bit of coolant around this morning when I looked -- the level didn't appear too low; I topped it off with some water, but it still won't start..

Anyone has a clue?

Maybe a faulty sensor, or maybe a wire has broken when they replaced the sensor, they can become brittle with age.

Don't be too hard on the garage, these things happen.

Actually, I've figured it out... It's the MAF sensor that is contaminated or damaged... Google reported a guy whose engine was doign that, and in the end it was the MAF sensor.
So, I started to wonder how the sensor could have developped a problem...

And if you look on the picture of that rerouted overflow conduit, you'll notice I've added some blue paper at the places where I saw it leak... it's also leaking all the way down... and THAT blue paper is JUST over the entrance of the air box, so when this morning I started the engine it sucked in all kind of sh*t that had leaked that, contaminating the whole thing....

So, I unplugged the MAF and sure enough, the engine starts! Now I don't know how badly the whole thing is contaminated, or how to fix it really...

So, went to halford, bought some electrical contact cleaner, sprayed the MAF sensor, air tried it with the compressor. Also did the connectors. Same result.

Is it safe to drive without MAF sensor? ie, back to the garage on monday?

It's definitely *their* blunder there. The new contraption leaks everywhere :/

I had the same problems as you recently,i fitted a new inlet cam sensor, and it still wouldn't start,so I replaced the exhaust cam sensor and the Maf sensor, all oem, from euro car parts, and the problems were cured, personally Ide try with the exhaust cam sensor first.
Thanks
Jimmy.

Perfectly safe to drive without the MAF plugged in, in fact it's a fairly standard diagnostic to unplug it. It will default to a standard map on the ECU and run perfectly fine, assuming it's that which is faulty!

If they've managed to cock-up the pipe they may have done the same elsewhere. I'd take it back, but don't start shouting till you get to the root of the problem. Should never come out of a garage worse than it went in.

Well, I did a few things. I checked the airbox and yes, there was fouling in there, well pretty much everywhere. I confirmed that without the airbox, without the MAF plugged the engine runs fine.

I cleaned the MAF filament -- no luck. Tried both Halford spray and WD40 contact cleaner, and dried it all up with the compressor -- no luck :/

So since I *suspect* my airfilter might have been contaminated, I did a bit of a leap of faith and installed @5harp3y induction kit I had received last week -- because I know *that* filter is clean as a whistle. Engine still won't start with MAF plugged, but works perfectly well without, so i went for a test drive and *whoozer* it goes like crazy! So *perhaps* I needed a new MAF sensor anyway?

I'll still have to return to the garage anyway for them to fix that leaking pipe. I currently wrapped it all up in paper towels, and I hope there's enough of it so it drys out before fouling the place. But at least, the car isn't parked dead on my driveway :/

Cleaning the Maf sensor is hit and miss, tried it on mine when I had running problems, it killed the Maf completely. New OEM Maf fitted (Bosch) and car was back to normal.

I would've used copper to extend that expansion pipe in all honesty. You can shape it better (and it stays in shape) and you can make a small "flare" at the end to put the hose clip against and prevent leakage. Did they just straight cut what I think is hard nylon pipe?

Tony.

ps. You may have needed a MAF sensor anyway or/and you may have just felt the benefit of an induction kit.:)
