Just a quick question @t-tony and @Stevo7682 :p
Please could you tell me ........ :)
If you have a MOT now but the MOT isn't due till the 22nd May and the car fails can you still drive the car until the 22nd or do you get the work done before you can drive it :)
Thank you both :)

Classic question @Shelly

I would say no. Insurance would not like you driving an unfit car. Garage should not let you take it away, but then it's not their problem if you do.
Depends what you fail on ? A bulb for eg, drive straight to halfords. Common sence realy.

I was told by the guy that tested my car last year that you can't if it fails

Hi Shelly as has been said you shouldn't be driving on your remaining ticket time because
It has always been illegal to drive on a public road with a known defect on your car .
If you have failed an mot ( the minimum road safety standards) then you can't say you didn't know you had a defect when you have a fail that says otherwise.
After may 20th when the new test comes in looks like if you bring car in and fail remaining ticket won't be valid.

Currently As long as you have a current MOT even if your car fails you can legally still drive it. However I would suggest it would depend on the fail if you would, for example brakes I wouldn't, bulb blown of course I would.

The problem here is it removes the incentive for people to get their cars tested before the old one expires and ultimately we will see more untested cars on the road.

Tony.

After the rule change it is going to cause dealers who arrange an MoT for their customers a big problem.
Many use the MoT as a cheap diagnosis. Because many don’t do MoT themselves they will end up with failures stranded at MoT stations.
They have to either stop providing that service, make provisions for recovering failures or ensure the car is a MoT pass before they take it.
It gets worse when customers take their car to be serviced and then straight to the MoT and it fails - you’ve just paid for it to be fully checked and put in a roadworthy condition and they didn’t.

Have to admit Tony though the amount of MOTs that I currently do that are already out of date it's quite bad so I don't know if this particular piece of the new legislation will change much I regularly test cars that are in daily use with Mot that are weeks out of date .

The MOT is for my sons car :p
When my Z have a MOT I always get the work done the next day ;)
And when he asked me that question , I wasn't sure of the answer ;)
Thank you for your replies ;)

I've been testing a lot of cars that are tested till after May 20th Steve and i think some people are running scared of what they perceive to be harsher tests so are getting them done before that date. One in particular today which I'll post later.

Tony.

I've been told that if the car fails the test it goes onto the Police computer as having no MOT, the failure over rides the remaining ticket.

Is this right?

Effectively yes is what I understand. It’s the DVSA that hold the records. The police have access to that data (as do we).

The handling of that data doesn’t change, but, the previous valid MoT will be voided.
Is it getting a bit like road tax though. If you have you’re MoT done early after the change you will lose the remaining days that you have paid for. If your car passes do they forward date the new one to the end date of thr previous certificate.

That is how I understand it Tim. It's no different than now apart from it will be logged on a Database readily accessible to the Police.

Anyone who has, in the past, had a car tested and failed, returning for re test within 10 working days has been playing Russian roulette really only now we've had our heads pulled from under the sand!

Just took this off .gov, it suggests that you can still drive your car after a fail,
Taking your vehicle away for repairs
You can take your vehicle away if your MOT certificate is still valid.

Thanks chaps.

It's a problem then for someone who wants to take their car away to fix it them selves, or take it to another garage.

Unless it'd be overlooked if you've just left the MOT station, like RFL does.

But not all MOT stations do repairs, and many garages wont do welding, so one would have to take the car elsewhere.

I thought the 30 day period that you could get your MOT done beforehand was to allow you to get it fixed?

Times have changed.

And you will still be able to, BUT, the wording may say that you have to drive directly home if that's where you're going. However, as now, you still risk driving a car with defects like we all do. there should have been clarification about this from the DVSA, but as usual they're keeping their heads down and allowing confusion to reign. You can take a vehicle for an MOT if it's not taxed IF you have an appointment where they have recorded your vehicle Reg. No. (make sure they do this) and that you drive directly to the testing station (not stopping to do the weekly shop!) and directly home afterwards.

If your sons car fails, the easy answer is to lend him your Zed.....=))

An example of a person having a car tested before the new rules kick in, on purpose . . . . . or not.;)

1st test today.
20180501_080032.webp
20180501_080049.webp

22" rims and 30 series belts (let's be honest, you can't call those things tyres:eek:).
On the O/S/R wheel inner rim a welded repair and a very poor one at that. It will crack again through that surface weld.
20180501_082925.webp

However, on the N/S/R wheel inner rim more cracks which before May 20th. may still be welded. Where we had these done a dar better repair was carried out.
20180501_164039.webp
20180501_164033.webp

This is only a stop gap repair though because next year those 2 rims will be scrap, unless the repairs are invisible and that requires better repairs still including re powder coating.
Anyway after this car, a Continetal GTC by the way. The day went south including an Isuzu Trooper, Renault Trafic, P206, a Saxo! amongst others.

Tony.
