Advice on best one for a 1997 Z3 1.9 , is there much difference between them? I have the airbag reset tool and I understand it's possible to use an ELM 327 connected to the round socket under the bonnet using the 20 pin cable adapter.

If all you want to read is the engine computer (DME) then an ELM327 adapter and a phone app like OBD2Fusion is all you need. Works on any Z3. Cheap and does the trick nicely. A WiFi adapter for an Apple phone and a Bluetooth adapter for a android phone.

If you want to be able to read the codes and data in all modules in the car, it gets a little tricky. The Z3 (not the Z3M) became fully OBD2 compliant at build date 03/98. Before that date the Z3 was a mix of OBD1/ADS and OBD2 modules. Many scanner do not talk OBD1/ADS. I wrote up a thread about this here. https://zroadster.org/threads/how-to-scan-early-model-z3s-pre-build-date-03-98.39937/

I have not had the pleasure of working with a C110 or C310, so can't comment on their ability to talk to the modules in Z3's older than 03/98. We need people who have these scanners to comment on their experiences.

I have a C110 which I use with my 1998 build Z3m and it seems to work very well.
