As some of you may know i have a second zed that is a project.

One of the mirrors was broken when I got the car so I bolted a bit of metal to secure it down, some idiot broke it again, I don't know whether it was done intentionally or not.

Is there another way to fix this? Will I have to buy a new mirror? If so - how much for it @spurs fan in a coupe?

A few people on here have repaired the stem.

A decent used one is between £100-150 on places like eBay

How would you repair the stem? Does mine look like it can be repaired?

I called up quarry motors today (they break BMWs) and they had a few z3s available but no wing mirrors. Apparently the last wing mirror that came in sold for £175.

There is also the repair kit on eBay which sells for £95 but I'm unsure how well the paint will match after its painted, or whether it can be painted at all. If it can't that means I need to buy a pair.

There is a company that makes replacement internals and other wing mirror parts. You'll need Google translate though...

If all your outer parts are ok and it's just the stem gone then the repair kits as pointed out by Gazhyde and those on eBay are your cheapest option. If you need to repaint your old outer covers would still be better than most used units.

Mine had a broken mirror when I bought the car. Got a used one for £100 then had it painted as part of the respray as it was silver.

There must be another type of car somewhere that has a similar type of mirror. If you could find an alternative you could start a new custom fitment. Some people fit all sorts of weird and wonderful things to their Zeds all in the name of individuality so an aftermarket mirror wouldn't and shouldn't be looked at any differently.

Thanks guys

@Grumpy they all seem to be selling at around the £100 mark. It's funny how overpriced they are.

I'm trying to find someone that's breaks cars and has a Z3 available that they are breaking *but* they don't know how much the parts sell for and thus sell me the wing mirrors for cheap. But I doubt that'll happen.

Just to give you guys a comparison, a wing mirror for the E36 will sell for £10-20 on eBay... I suppose that's because the E36's are still widely available.

@GazHyde I'll take a look on the site, translate won't work on all the pages and some of the text on the pages are actually put into images. e.g. the price list - http://www.spiegel-z3.de/preise.html -- anyway I'll type it out myself if I have to.

@Jack Ratt I've saw this on .net a while back but they don't go with the rest of the car. http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=35506

They would be better if they were 50% bigger and then colour matched

Thanks for your help mate :) that's not a bad idea but I don't know whether I could get myself to replace the oe mirror and stick a Ford part on there  but it's got me thinking if I can find something that looks the right size then there's no harm in buying it. Of course all of this is only if it's at the right price too.

Funny thing is if this had happened to my main zed, I would have purchased a oe replacement of eBay straight away....

Just look for the type that fit to the door rather than the quarter light.

With Zed mirrors being so expensive and rare as hens teeth you could start a new fashion. Necessity is the mother of invention and it's only a matter of time before someone does it, that's if they haven't already.

Could even be a business opportunity @littlefeller =))

I bet Jase would have a crack if there's a quid or two in it

@t-tony how would after market mirrors go in the mot? If say, you couldn't adjust the mirror from the inside of the car. Cheers.

@Jack Ratt What about mirrors from the Zed's rusty step-brother.

The mx5 ;)

As the zed is an older car I can't justify putting a mirror from a brand new car (or newish car) on it, imho it wouldn't flow with the rest of the car, but we do seem to be making progress :)

EDIT: Has anyone put the MX5 mirror on the Zed?

It's the actual shape of the mirror that would sway my choice rather than how old it is, also I would look for one with a similar shaped mounting to make modification as easy as possible

It doesn't have to be adjustable from thr inside of the car Faheem. It only needs to be adjustable to give adequate view to the rear from the driver's seat

Agreed Adrian , I lost count of the times I helped my old dad set his wing mirrors up on his old Angila or Austin Van without him losing patience with me. But I was simply saying that they don't (at the present time) have to be adjustable from the driver's seat only able to give adequate view from said seat.

Tony.
