So, with the advent of Andy Murray now being the World's No.1 tennis player and also being touted as Britain's greatest ever sportsman, what do you think? Very subjective matter! No doubt he is already one of the greats and will hopefully go on to be the greatest Brit, I think he's ace.

My picks in no particular order;

@Grumpy
Andy Murray
Ryan Giggs
Lewis Hamilton
Sir Chris Hoy
Sir Ben Ainsley
Sir Steve Redgrave
Daley Thompson

Phil Taylor (I know it's a pub game)

Looks like the start of a list... @Grumpy, where are you! :whistle:

Can't see why Murray would be placed highly on the list, other than being good enough to (eventually) make world #1. It's either a slow news day, or just because we have always been bad at Tennis so he stands out. Maybe in a few years if he can hang on to #1, he may be worthy of making a list...

Subjective ;) just my view of course. Forgot about @Grumpy, hang on ......

You've started something here Andy.
Skilled though he is I don't think Phil Taylor quite cuts it.
Another couple of years and then Andy Murray might qualify. He has done brilliantly for sure but greatness has to be established!

There's a few more footballers that maybe should be there.
George Best
Bobby Charlton
Bobby Moore

Stirling Moss for sheer bravery in those most dangerous years of motor racing. John Surtees too for winning on two and four wheels.
Am sure there will be many others.

Solid choices Ian and all worthy candidates. Couldn't resist the Phil Taylor one, Yvonne goes mad when I mention him in the same breath as "proper" sportsmen. Agree on the Andy Murray thing but hopefully he'll make it.

We all gravitate to sports which we follow, for me mine would be biased to motor sports. I'm too young to get caught up in the usual Moss/Fangio et all discussion. I grew up cheering on the likes of Alesi, Mansell, Prost, Schumacher, Berger and so on. I'm sure the racing was harder/grittier in the early days, but these are the guys who I class as proper sports men (ok, one of those was prone to un-sportsmanlike behaviour at times).

Football, meh. Certainly none of the overpaid idiots you see tripping over blades of grass these days should ever make a list of sportsmen.

For determination the prize would be Mansel all day long, a tad unlucky and should/could've been a tripple World Champion.

Greatest meaning most successful? James Hunt? At least for being one of England's best swordsmen, Barry Sheen, balls and legs of steel, Jamie Bestwick, for still doing what he's doing at 44, Eddie the Eagle, for being rubbish, but brave, Geoff Capes, world's strongest fat bloke and best beard.

Not all about golds is it? .. Although agree Mo Farrah too,

In my view a person who drives a car or rides a motorbike or any other powered vehicle for that matter cannot be classed as sportsmen, and no amount of discussion will persuade me otherwise. Skilled, brave ..... yes of course, but to me they aren't sportspersons even though the discipline they practice is known as "Motor Sport".

To me, sport is running, jumping, swimming, fighting etc. Hand / eye co-ordination is a key

Andy Murray is right up there with a good shout of being Britain's best ever sportsperson, along with Lennox Lewis, Daley Thompson and Ian Botham

I think its way to premature to list Murray as Britains best EVER, he is not in the same league as some of the above mentioned names, maybe in a few years if he can keep going of course,
Jonny Wilkinson
Steve Redgrave
Seb Coe
Bobby Moore
And dare I say it, David Beckham,

Thanks for all your support guys lol! I don't do sport but there are one or two for me

@Grumpy :D
Carl Fogarty
Steve Davis
Stephen Hendry
Eric Bristow

It's a fair point, but in the world we live it's how anyone who is competing at something is referred. You could expand that further and say anyone who competes on anything powered isn't. Which would discount any "sport" Such as horse racing.

The dictionary states...
noun, plural sportsmen.
1. a man who engages in sports, especially in someopen-air sport, as hunting, fishing, racing, etc.
2. a person who exhibits qualities especially esteemed in those who engage in sports as fairness, courtesy, good temper, etc.

Successful, professional, humble (whilst being second to none). Whatever flicks your switch really.

What? None of our amazing disabled athletes on anyone's list....those who have far more to overcome to get to the top than many!!!

Oh and why exclude around 50% of the population? Kelly Holmes, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Victoria Pendleton, Laura Trott!!!!!
