Hi guys ,, just had my Z3 3.0 out (early finish from work and the sun was shining) ,, after around 10-15 mins of driving I came to a junction and the brake pedal (best way I can describe it) started juddering and making a sort of crunching sound ,, I stopped and checked the pads +discs although I knew it wasn’t these as I’ve had it in bits and renewed these less than 1000 miles ago ,, first time it’s done it and it only did it once ,, just wonder if any of you have come across this before ? ,, thanks in advance for any advice 👍

Did the ABS light flicker when it was juddering? Sounds like the ABS kicked in for some reason?

That’s the thing Tony ,, no the ABS light didnt come on or flicker (although the sensation definitely felt ABS related )

Similar happened to me couple weeks ago. Went past building site, lots of debris about, started making a godawful noise as car came to a full stop. Mine was more of a metal on metal sound though and no change to brake pedal.

Took all four wheels off, nothing obvious, put them back on and noise was gone. Can only assume a small bit of metal got lodged somewhere underneath temporarily. It sounded horrific though:rolleyes:

Check the condition of the ABS reluctor rings. They may be split/corroded (or need cleaning up)

If it was something such as a piece of road grit which had got into the calliper you will see score marks on the disc.

Rear backplates not straight forward to change, in case you didn't know.

You'll need to cut through the backplate to wrap it around. Otherwise it's a big old job pulling the hub.

I have seen many backplates where they were in good condition apart from the hold down pin holes had corroded out. This you can repair using nuts and bolts.

Done exactly that on various occasions as a result of your original advice on the forum several years ago.

It’s funny you should say that ,, I did strip them down as one of the retaining pins had popped through the hole so I did put a small bolt with a washer and the spring then put a washer and a lock-nut on the back ,, it does seem to have worked so maybe il leave it like that and see how it goes for now ,, thanks again for the advice and tips 👍

Yeah it does seem quite a sizeable task ,, i didn’t want to bodge it but if cutting a little bit of the metal away saves pulling the hub off then I’m ok with that 👍
