Hi Folks,

How do I make sure I get the correct brake calipers for the front of my z3? It's a 51 plate 2.2 I believe it's the BMW Z3 Roadster 2001 E36 [1995-2003] Convertible 2.2i Convertible 2171ccm 163HP 120KW (Petrol).

I've had a look at the caliper and all I can see on it is 640 BIR - or something like that and BMW
It has the vented discs

many thanks

Take a look at this link, input your Zed data and that will give you the correct part number

Part numbers are great and we love realoem :) But on this occasion I'd say the casting on the caliper is the main way I check I'm getting the right caliper. Buying second-hand and reconditioned off ebay that is.

If you want new from BMW (expensive) then let them tell you what's needed from the chassis number or registraion.

Genuine front 2.2 calipers are ATE and stamped 54/22 which refers to the size. Like this one on ebay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Z3-2-2i-Driver-Right-Side-Front-Brake-Caliper-Carrier/302824704129

You have 3 basic choices for calipers:
  1. Second-hand as-is
  2. Reconditioned
  3. New
Clearly within each choice there are further options including new where copy parts are available. But pick wisely from a reputable supplier and also consider doing a recon yourself. It's actually quite easy with an inexpensive seal kit.

4th choice. Recondition your own callipers. It's cheaper and will occupy some time while your at home.

Tony.
