Morning all
Not much of a poster (due to lack of expertise) but have really appreciated the resources on here whilst I’ve been working on my little M44 that I use for targa rally’s (I believe our pic made it into the BMW Car Club magazine last month).
Anyway to the problem. Some thieving so and so nicked my coat from a busy pub over Christmas. Only thing in the pocket was the only key I had for the Z3.
Rather than a full remote key (£200) I thought I was being clever getting a service key (£40).
However I didn’t realise a service key doesn’t open the boot.
After a search I’ve seen the YouTube clip of the red z3, but wondered if there is a better way?
Any guidance gratefully received.

@Sean d was looking at smoothing his boot lock off on his, and he probably has done it but I can't remember or not (my bad Sean!). What I'm getting at, is that he's had a good look at the boot mechanism and may be able to advise if there is another way...

IMHO I think you are going to have to bite the bullet and buy a new key from BMW.
Sean d's system opens the boot from inside the car.

Yes mine opens via remote, it was quite a bit of work but a very cheap mod as the actuator was only about £3
I was more hoping you could explain about the lock mechanism rather than the remote bit. I was assuming it's connected to the existing mechanism, is there anyway the boot lid can be opened in the OP's circumstance?

Ah ok, the only way I can think is via a hole behind the roundel, you can just put your finger in and pop the release, I have done this in case of emergency,

Ok I have a hole, but metal plate behind the boot lid doesn’t want to be pushed, slid or pulled in any direction.
Could it be that the lid is dead locked? As the key slot is in the horizontal position.

This is starting to feel like group therapy!

If memory serves me right you move the lever from right to left, there will be a bar connected to it that heads towards the lock, you may be able to knock it off as it sits in a plastic retaining clip

Hi @McSwerve if you search YouTube for BMW Z3 boot lock, you will find a 3 minute video which shows how to do this.

Tony.

Rain, bad light and apathy stopped play.
I’ll try and have another go in the week and report back.
Many thanks for the input.

Just a thought. Could you use INPA software to activate the boot release?
It looks like the locks are operated through the body control module.

In the interest of closure, I got In.
Not quite the clean grommet finish as shown above, caused by my lack of patience rather than the drill solution not working.
Many thanks for the guidance.
